Undergraduate Studies

The B.A. in Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong provides training in the study of music both as a humanistic discipline and as a profession. Our well-balanced curriculum places equal emphasis on music making and academic studies, with courses that explore Western, Chinese and world musical traditions, and that foster the development of musicianship, creativity, and critical thinking.

Music students at CUHK come in many types. Some are highly gifted performers while others are more interested in composing, teaching, or the scholarly study of music. What they share is a curiosity about the world and a deep commitment to the study of music. In the Department of Music, we aim to cultivate each student’s interests and potential.

Through an admissions process that includes an entrance test, audition, and interview, we endeavour to select students who have the interests, skills, and aptitude to fully benefit from the rich educational experience we offer.

The international teaching team of the Music Department comprises scholars and composers with strong track records in research publications and concert presentations, as well as a deep commitment to teaching. Through studying with our prestigious teachers, students can advance their musical creativity and knowledge in specialised areas.

Training in performance is offered by Hong Kong's leading professional musicians, including members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Chung Chi Choir, Chung Chi Orchestra and Chung Chi Wind Orchestra hold concerts on a regular basis. In addition, the Department organizes numerous research colloquia, workshops, masterclasses and concerts by renowned scholars, performers and composers from both Hong Kong and overseas, and hosts Ensemble-in-Residence programme every year.

Over half of our recent graduates have gone on to further studies, with about 70% of these students pursuing higher degrees overseas. Graduates who loin the work force after completion of the B.A. have taken up careers in teaching, arts administration, and broadcasting.

Entrance requirements

Academic Qualifications
Level 3 in Chinese Language and English Language, Level 2 in Mathematics (compulsory part) and Liberal Studies in the HKDSE examinations are required. Level 3 in two elective subjects (Music is preferred).
Music Qualifications
As a reference, students should have attained a level of proficiency in their main instrument/voice at or above Grade 8 (ABRSM/Trinity College)
Supplementary information
JUPAS applicants are strongly advised to state their academic interest and musical experience in the “Additional Information” of their JUPAS application. Student should, if possible, provide letters of recommendation from music teachers/ music professionals.

Senior Year Admission

This programme aims to provide academic training to local students who wish to get a Bachelor's degree after obtaining an associate degree or higher diploma in Music, and is intended for those interested in the academic studies of music.

Study period: 2 years
Unit requirement: 69 units
Regular deadline: 16 Febuary 2023
Applicants shall be eligible to apply for admission if they

have successfully completed a local course of study leading to the qualification of associate degree / higher diploma, and
have attained an acceptable level of proficiency in English and Chinese languages.

Note:

Final year student will also be considered
Applicants with overseas associate degree/ higher diploma qualifications cannot be admitted under this scheme.
