I was first trained in sociolinguistics at the University of Macau where I wrote my academic thesis on the linguistic landscape in Shanghai and got my first M.A. in 2018. During my two-year study in Macau, I was working for a Jewish professor whose research interest in Jewish history tremendously influenced me and later on led to my anthropological study on the Jews. My proposed research examines how the Jews of Hong Kong construct their Jewish identities and explores the processes of their identity formation via four interdependent lenses (e.g. religious, communal, local but non communal, and global). I am curious to know how Hong Kong plays a role in these processes. Does it suffice to say a Hong Kong Jewish diaspora and a Hong Kong Jewish identity? Do the intercultural exchange processes happening within the Jewish community here bear the presence of Hong Kong? The questions are all a matter of in-depth investigation and may shed some lights on the studies of Jewish diasporas and other diasporas as well.
