ANTH 5000-level courses are for M.A. students. Some are specifically designed for graduate students, while others share lectures with an undergraduate course and have a separate tutorial just for MA students. These linked courses provide a basic orientation to the subject, but M.A. students go deeper and have more required readings than the undergraduates (normally two articles a week in addition to the textbook chapter or article(s) assigned to undergraduate students). To fulfill course requirements, M.A. students may have to take an essay exam or write a research paper. There is no thesis required for the M.A., but research papers are required for most 5000-level courses.

The minimum length of study for the M.A. is one year (two semesters) for full-time students, two years (four semesters) for part-time students. The maximum length of study is three years (six semesters) for full-time students, four years (eight semesters) for part-time students. Prospective part-time students should remember that some courses will not be offered in the evenings or on Saturdays. Part-time students will have more choices if they are able to take a half day per week off work or if they have flexible work hours.
