Establishment of JLGIS

On 28 August 1997, as a collaboration between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Joint Laboratory for GeoInformation Science (JLGIS) was founded with the following objectives:
  1. To develop China¡¦s worldwide technological exchange and international standard in GeoInformation Science in order to promote the national culture
  2. To cooperate with renowned scientists in promoting and developing GeoInformation Science in order to accelerate the development of information infrastructure in China
  3. To establish a foundation for technological collaboration, academic exchange and training between CAS and CUHK

The opening ceremony of JLGIS was officiated by Professor LU Yongxiang, President of CAS, and Professor Arthur K.C. Li, Vice Chancellor of CUHK at that time. Representatives from the China¡¦s National Science and Technology Commission, China¡¦s National Natural Science Foundation and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Region (UNESCAP) of the United Nations also attended the ceremony and expressed their wishes that JLGIS would be established as an important education and research centre of GeoInformation Science in Asia.
