In the one-and-a-half-day event of Research Day 2022 & Joint Symposium on “Advances in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology: From Basic Science to Emerging Technologies” co-hosted by the School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS) and the Hong Kong Society for Developmental Biology (HKSDB) from 16 – 17 Jun 2022, Prof. Hon Fai CHAN was invited as one of 16 speakers for a short talk on “Mechanical folding induces development of engineered intestinal tissue”.

Prof. Chan shared with the attendants his work on engineered tissue folding. While mucosal folding is a ubiquitous phenomenon observed in many hollow or tubular human tissues/organs, such as stomach and small intestine, recapitulating the process for tissue engineering has yet to be achieved. In his talk, Prof. Chan introduced his work about designing a multilayer cell-laden hydrogel scaffold to recapitulate the folding process and assessing how mechanical environment in the folds influences the development of engineered intestinal tissue in vitro and in vivo.
