Biography

Sealing CHENG received her doctorate from the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Oxford University. She was then a Rockefeller postdoctoral fellow in Gender, Sexuality, Health, and Human Rights at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. In January 2005, she began teaching at Wellesley College in the US. Her research is focused on sexuality with reference to sex work, human trafficking, women’s activism, and policy-making. Her book, On the Move for Love: Migrant Entertainers and the U.S. Military in South Korea (University of Pennsylvania Press 2010) received the Distinguished Book Award of the Sexualities Section of the American Sociological Association in 2012.

Ting GUO is Assistant Professor of Cultural and Religious Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong, focusing on religion, politics, and gender in transnational Asia. She was trained in Religious Studies at the University of Edinburgh, with an Innovation Initiative Award-winning thesis on AI, spirituality, and secularism in twentieth-century Europe and has since been working on (post) secularism from a comparative perspective. She also holds a status-only Assistant Professorship with Wycliffe College, University of Toronto. She is writing her first book, Politics of Love: Religion, Secularism, and Love as a Political Discourse in Modern China. Her works have appeared or are forthcoming in journals including Journal of the American Academy of ReligionMethod & Theory in the Study of ReligionCritical Research on ReligionAnthropology Today, and Journal of Religion and Film. She co-hosts a podcast called 時差 ”in-betweenness” (@shichapodcast).
