Visit from CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School

On 14 December, Mr. Yu, a teacher of CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School, led seven students to visit S.H. Ho College. The College Master Prof. Samuel Sun and two SHHO students (Mr. Lam Man Hei and Miss Wang Liting) met with these visitors, giving an introduction on the College and having breakfast with them. During the visit, Prof. Sun answered diverse questions from the secondary school students, for example, his personal path in science, how to solve problems in science, how to keep motivated and how to overcome challenges, difficulties and adversities. On the other hand, as alumni of CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School, the two SHHO students were more than happy to share their university lives with the young visitors from their alma mater.

Visitation from Buddhist Sin Tak College

On 17 May 2016, the cosy sunbeam showered on the campus of S.H. Ho College. Led by Mr. Ho Moon-tim, Principal of Buddhist Sin Tak College, 70 teachers and students of the school visited our campus. Prof. Victor Lau gave them a warm welcome, followed by his introduction of CUHK’s unique collegiate system and S.H. Ho College’s whole person education philosophy. Afterwards, Ma Ka Chung (Year 4, Computer Science and Engineering) shared her college life with students through elaborating photos of College events like the orientation camp and communal dinner. Immediately after the talk, S.H. Ho College staff led the visitors to visit the college campus and facilities. Not only an in-depth understanding on the campus facilities and students’ college life, they also enjoyed appreciating the artworks in the College’s ‘We are Graduands’ Arts and Photo Exhibition at which they felt the struggles and disoriented feeling in face of entering society. The energetic secondary students had left, the footprints they left on campus still radiated with their youthful energy.

Mr. Ou Wenjun, Dean of Innovation Experimental College and Executive Director of Youren College of Northwest A&F University; and Mr. Wang Bo, Secretary of the College, visited S.H. Ho College to meet with Prof. Samuel Sun, Master of S.H. Ho College and a staff Ms. Lau Yuen Yu. Their visitation aimed at learning about student management, deepening collaboration on the exchange programme between the two Colleges, and a potential summer student interflow programme. When the meeting was about to an end, Master invited the delegates to further exchange ideas at lunch. Among the lunch attendees also included Prof. K.B. Wong, Dean of Students of S.H. Ho College; and Mr. Wei Bin, an exchange student from Northwest A&F University. Prof. Wong shared with the delegates his experience in student affairs at the College, while Mr. Wei told them his academic life in Hong Kong and college life at S.H. Ho College. After the lunch, the delegates toured around the campus under guidance of the College staff and the exchange student, during which they were impressed by the local hostel life and vibrant student activities.

On 30 October, Mr. Chau Hau Fung, Principle of CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School, led 27 teachers and students to visit S.H. Ho College. They were impressed by Master Samuel Sun’s introduction of CUHK collegiate system and education features of S.H. Ho College. Master Sun further inspired them with a talk on ‘Innovation’ by elaborating the correlation between imagination, creativity and innovation. He summarized his talk with Einstein’s famous quote ‘Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited while Imagination encircles the world.Imagination will take you everywhere.’
After the talk, a few students of the College introduced to visitors the hostel facilities which gave them some ideas about hostel life. Having visited the Arctic Exhibition organized by the College, the secondary school students were fascinated and looked forward to university education. All the visitors went to Connexion to dine with Master Sun. They were much inspired by Master’s rich and fulfilling life, who answered their questions ranging from further studies to vocation in life. Master Sun gave them insightful advice patiently.

Mr. David Ho, CEO of Pacific BMW, and his family member visited S.H. Ho College on 8 October 2015. They learnt about the College’s development in recent years, and how the student programmes and other dimensions like full residence and communal dining tie together to give students all-encompassing ‘home away from home’ experiences. They further discussed the arrangement on inaugural partnership on the College’s Summer Internship Programme in Pacific BMW, located in Los Angeles, United States. It was hoped that students would extend their cross-cultural horizon and acquire vocational experience working abroad.
Guest Reception – Dr. Roger Harris

Dr. Roger Harris is a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. He works with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak on communication and technology development projects with remote and isolated indigenous communities. They have been arranging service learning visits by students from Cornell University who will be collecting indigenous knowledge relating to traditional agriculture and climate change.
As a biologist working on rice improvement, including on the yield and nutritional quality of hybrid rice, Master Sun was interested in Dr. Harris’ agricultural development projects. They met on 11 September to exchange ideas on service learning and explore opportunities to collaborate on joint service learning projects.

34 delegates from Shenzhen University visited S.H. Ho College on 28 August. Exploring the campus facilities under the guidance of a College staff, they learnt the idea of how S.H. Ho College builds a home away from home for its students. After the campus tour, they went to the Theatre of the College to attend a talk on Collegiate Education presented by Mr. Andrew Lau, College Secretary. From the historical background of the Oxbridge collegiate education, the global collegiate universities at a glance, the unique and treasured tradition of CUHK collegiate education to our College on a fully residential and communal dining basis, Mr. Lau illustrated the essence of education enabled by a residential college. ‘A residential college is where students learn together by living together. Education is no longer confined to a training of mind or a preparation for professions, but an all-rounded experience meant to develop their whole-person development,’ said Mr. Lau.

On 24 August, Master Samuel Sun received Dr. Louis Ng, Deputy Director (Culture), Leisure and Cultural Services Department whose major responsibilities include overseeing the delivery of cultural services including the management of museums, public libraries, performance venues, the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Music Office; the promotion and presentation of cultural programmes and heritage preservation; and planning of new cultural facilities. They explored opportunities for further collaboration in cultural programmes and exchanged views on cultural education. Master Sun gave Dr. Ng publications of the College as mementos, namely SHHO’s Review 2006-2014 and Four Seasons at S.H. Ho College. After delivering a presentation on CUHK collegiate education and the unique role of S.H. Ho College, Master Sun brought him around the College campus to give him a glimpse into the life of SHHO students including the residential life and hostel activities.
Visitation from SKH Macau Social Service Coordination Office

Arranged by SKH Macau Social Service Coordination Office, a group of 30 secondary school students paid a visit to S.H. Ho College on 21 August. The visitation aimed at promoting exchange between Hong Kong and Macau students in regards to social affairs and lifelong planning. After three SHHO students introduced their college life and learning experience at the University to the Macau students, SKH Macau Social Service Coordination Office subsequently introduced rationale of the scheme ‘Delving together for a Better Tomorrow’. Afterwards, the two groups of students engaged in a fruitful interaction on learning, regional culture and social affairs. To help the youngsters have firsthand understanding of college life, they were toured around the campus to observe student facilities and appreciate the picturesque view of Tolo Harbour on the College Lawn.

On 28 July, Dr. Robert Henderson, Senior Tutor of Emmanuel College, the University of Cambridge visited the College, and met with Prof. Wong Wing Shing, Chairman of the College’s Student Exchange Committee. The discussion helped to deepen the collaboration between S.H. Ho College and Emmanuel College in student exchange programme. Since 2011, S.H. Ho College has been sending SHHO students to experience academic life and college activities at Cambridge. S.H. Ho College believes that this overseas exposure enables students to develop a global outlook through their intercultural exposure abroad. After the meeting, Dr. Henderson proceeded to Connexion to further the idea exchange on student development with Dr Tzu-leung Ho, Chairman of the College’s Committee of Overseers; Mrs. Stella Ho; Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Mr. Hamilton Ho, Member of the College’s Committee of Overseers; Mr. Norman Ho, Trustee of Ho Tim Foundation; Prof. Wong Wing Shing; and Prof. Wong Kam-bo, Dean of Students of the College.

Three delegates from Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat-sen University led by Ms. He Wanwen, Secretary of the Youth League Committee, visited S.H. Ho College on 19 June 2015. They embarked on an in-depth discussion with staff of S.H. Ho College on student development affairs. Our college staff introduced to them the origin of collegiate education, development of CUHK collegiate system, position of S.H. Ho College on whole person education, organization of student bodies and activities, and how the College General Education programme helps personal growth and lifelong development of freshers and graduands. Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat-sen University is a residential college at its germination stage. The delegates were deeply interested in how S.H. Ho College communicated with its student bodies and their student activities were organized. They also recognized the College’s assiduous effort for nearly a decade in fostering students’ growth through pastoral care at ‘home’ and all kinds of education programmes.

Led by Dr. Tom Fong, Associate Vice-President (Student Development and Campus Service) of Hang Seng Management College (HSMC), 17 delegates composed of Hall Masters, Associate Hall Masters, Hall Tutors and staff of Student Affairs visited our campus on 3 June 2015. Master Samuel Sun warmly welcomed the delegates and began to share CUHK’s unique collegiate system and S.H. Ho College’s whole person education philosophy. Subsequently, Dr. Tom Fong introduced the design of residential halls and their Hall Life Education Programme. Like S.H. Ho College, HSMC is also a residential college at its germination stage. The delegates were fascinated by Prof. Victor Lau’s experience sharing as a warden in communicating with the College’s Resident Councils and Student Union. After the meeting, the delegates were led by Ms. Ida Law, Senior College Development Officer; and Mr. Brandon Ngai, Resident Tutor, to visit the college campus and facilities during which the delegates were inspired by how residential learning and whole person development are achieved in this home away from home.

Five F.5 students from CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School met with Master Samuel Sun for breakfast in Ho Sin Hang Hall at the College on 24 April. They were much inspired by Master Sun’s rich and fulfilling life, who answered their questions ranging from further studies, the attitude of academic pursuit to vocation in life. Master Sun gave them insightful advice patiently. The breakfast gathering was jointly organized by CUHK Alumni Affairs Office and CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School in a bid to extend students’ horizon through communicating with senior professors at breakfast, and encourage them to set life goals such as pursuing their tertiary education at CUHK. The scheme is therefore named as ‘First Encounter with CUHK’.
Master Sun encouraged the students to cultivate their imagination and sensitivity to observe from multi-perspectives. They were asked to be aware of the social issues as many problems in society are unresolved. ‘Our willingness to serve will drive us to observe the needy and unleash our potential to create innovative solutions,’ he remarked. The students were eager to the life at the university, so Master Sun and the College staff introduced to them the hostel facilities which gave them some ideas about hostel life. They were fascinated about their first encounter. Two weeks later, students sent Master Sun their gratitude cards in appreciation to the eye-opening opportunity.

A delegation led by Prof. Sun Hua, Executive Dean of Yuanpei College of Peking University, visited S.H. Ho College on 13 January 2015 to exchange views on collegiate education and deepen future cooperation on student development programmes. The student exchange programme between S.H. Ho College and Yuanpei College began in 2011. In 2014, four Yuanpei students took part in Cambodia service learning programme organized by S.H. Ho College to help rebuild the deprived community. Upon the delegates’ arrival, our students Ferdinand Tsang and Iris Zhao guided them to tour around the campus to learn about the student-oriented College facilities. Master Sun introduced to them the College development after the campus tour, followed by an array of life enriching opportunities for our College students discussed in the meetings, namely sending selected students to join Beijing Forum for academic exchange, visit Prof. Cai Yuanpei’s former residence, visit Xiling Seal Art Society (one of the most important traditional stone seal engraving associations), and call on to Xian Beilin Museum which is a unique collection of stone tablets containing the immortalized Chinese history.

A delegation comprising thirteen students and two teachers from Keqing College, Fudan University visited S.H. Ho College on 7 November 2014. Four Student Union members of our College received the delegates with hospitality. Chan Hey Man, President of the College’s Student Union, introduced to the delegates the role and operation of the Student Union. Afterwards, the students of the two colleges then discussed on the student activities, College culture formation, framework of student organizations and student autonomy issues. Our student representatives introduced the hostel facilities to the delegates after the discussion. During the campus tour, the delegates were fascinated by the annual Logos Fest which is an exhibition displaying our College freshers’ Logos Production (心聲習作) in College General Education Induction Course— GESH1010 Orientation and Outreach. This annual exhibition held in Chan Chun Ha Hall is a scripted articulation of their reflection in response to their dream , college life and expectation towards the University life.

A delegation led by Dame Fiona Reynolds, Master of Emmanuel College, visited S.H. Ho College on 11 September 2014 to exchange views on collegiate education and exchange programmes. They met with Dr and Mrs. Tzu-leung Ho, Chairman of the Committee of Overseers of the College; Master Samuel Sun; Prof. Wong Kam-bo, Dean of Students of the College; Prof. Wong Wing Shing, Chairman of the Student Exchange Committee of the College; and Prof. Kwan Kin-ming, Chairman of S.H. Ho College Scholarships, Awards, Financial Aids and Grants Committee. Following Master Sun’s introduction of SHHO’s unique culture and education philosophy of the College, the delegates learnt about several key initiatives of the College including the College General Education Programme, the overview of SHHO student participation in exchange programmes, and how students are benefited from the scholarship awards and bursaries offered by the College. SHHO exchange students Lloyd Meng, Theodosia Woo and Wennie Kang who returned from Emmanuel College attended the session to share their vibrant overseas exposure with the delegates, and introduced to them the student-oriented College facilities.

A delegation led by Prof. Julian Chang, Associate Dean of Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University, visited S.H. Ho College and exchanged views with college staff on collegiate education and student development programmes on 12 June 2014. Inspired by the prestigious Rhodes scholarship, Schwarzman Scholars is designed to educate future world leaders about China. 200 elite students from around the world will spend a postgraduate year studying at Tsinghua University to gain unrivaled exposure to China through mentorship opportunities, cultural immersion, extensive travel and access to distinguished visitors. Prof. Chang is responsible for the oversight, development, management, administration, and implementation of the Schwarzman Scholars programme, with a specific emphasis on and responsibility for programmatic elements and issues related to student life. Like S.H. Ho College, Schwarzman College is an academic and residential college inspired by the residential colleges at Harvard, Yale, Oxford and Cambridge.

The family found it a great experience seeing the well-equipped student hostel and administrative building which were under construction during their last visit to Hong Kong.

On 20 May 2014, Prof. David Li and Mr. Neil Schwartz from Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University visited S.H. Ho College to explore the way to run a College successfully. Prof. David Daokui Li is Professor of Economics at the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University and the Master of the new Schwarzman College. The Schwarzman College will house Schwarzman Scholars, the international one-year Master’s Degree program designed to inspire the next generation of global leaders and to facilitate the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures. The delegates met with Master Samuel Sun and Mr. Andrew Lau to exchange views on collegiate education and college management. Subsequent to the meeting, they toured around the campus to learn about how the college facilities are conducive to student programmes and activities.

11 executive members from the Hong Kong Aided Primary School Heads Association (Retired Principals Section) visited S.H. Ho College on 13 May 2014. As a newly established college, Master Samuel Sun presented on the College’s whole personal education value exemplified by its full residence and communal dinner, special student development programmes and College General Education Programme. The delegation was fascinated by how the ‘home’ atmosphere was nurtured through different College initiatives. Touring around the college campus to learn about student facilities, they reached the upper level of a student hostel embracing the picturesque landscape of the Tolo Harbour and CUHK Campus. Some visitors recalled their fond memories in their undergraduate studies at CUHK.

A 26-delegation from the Republic of Kazakhstan, including the Consul General of Kazakhstan Mr. Nurzhan Abdymomunov, visited S.H. Ho College on 9 May 2014. Master Samuel Sun presented to them on CUHK’s unique collegiate system and its education philosophy. Touring around the campus gave them an overview on college facilities and student life. Led by the Head of Analytical Department of the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, the delegation participated in the ‘Asian Educational Training Workshop on Strategic Management in Higher Education: International Trends and Practices’ during 4-10 May with the aim of learning more about the higher education sector in Hong Kong and Singapore, particularly in university governance and structure as well as internationalization strategies. They visited the College to learn about collegiate education.

On 25 February, Mr. Fried Keesen, Director of Education, University College Utrecht visited S. H. Ho College and met with Prof. Gordon Cheung, Associate Vice-President of CUHK; Master Sun, Master of SHHO; Prof. KB Wong, Dean of Students, and Prof. Wong Wing Shing, Chairman, Student Exchange Committee. The visit aimed to explore ways to deepen collaboration between UCU and SHHO on existing exchange partnership. They also discussed on offering more vacancies for UCU students to learn Chinese language and culture at CUHK. During the visit, Mr. Fried Keesen also met with exchange student to Utrecht, Mr. Xin Weining, and was interested in his experience in UCU.

Delegation from Peking University, led by Prof. Wang Enge, President, visited S.H. Ho College on 8 December 2013 to consolidate cooperation efforts between S.H. Ho College and Yuanpei College. The College Master Prof. Samuel Sun received the delegation and introduced to them the College development, followed by student exchange between the two Colleges. After the meetings and discussions, the delegation took tour around the campus. The visit nurtured friendship between Peking University and S.H. Ho College.

They attended the luncheon hosted by Dr. Tzu-leung Ho, Governor, S. H. Ho Foundation, and Chairman, the Committee of Overseers of S.H. Ho College, joined by other senior representatives of the University and S.H. Ho College like Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Sung, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Fellow of S.H. Ho College. In addition to the luncheon, they discussed on deepening collaboration in student exchange and graduate scholarships. Prof. Rob van der Vaart, Vice-rector for Learning and Teaching and Dean of the University College Utrecht, visited S. H. Ho College on 9 April to explore ways to deepen collaboration between UCU and SHHO, like joint honours summer classes, online collaboration in undergraduate research project in addition to the existing exchange partnership. Prof.Rob van der Vaart also met with exchange student from and to Utrecht, and was very interested in their experience in SHHO and back in UCU.

In addition to Master Sammuel Sun’s introducing the College to the visitors and discussion on future potential cooperations, the College made a special arrangement that Dr. Paxson and Mr. Margolin met with exchange students from Brown University and those SHHO students who have been and will be soon going on exchange to Brown. Visitors were led by the students to tour around the campus.
188 retired teachers from Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macao visited SHHO

November 22 was a busy day for the College. Four buses of 188 retired teachers from Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macao arrived at SHHO. Prof. Samuel Sun explained to the retired teachers what college system is, how new colleges like SHHO came about, and the uniqueness of college general education.
Member of National Academy of Sciences Winslow Briggs visited SHHO

Professor and Mrs. Winslow Briggs visited the S.H. Ho College on 12 November, 2012. Prof. Briggs, member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, USA and an international leader in plant molecular biology, is currently the Director Emeritus of Carnegie Institute of Washington, Department of Plant Biology at Stanford University. Professor Briggs received his A.B., M.A. and PhD degrees from Harvard University and was professor at Harvard before joining Stanford University. During the visit, with fond memory of his old Harvard days, Professor Briggs expressed complimentary appreciation of the founding and development of the S.H. Ho College.
Delegation from Peking University visited SHHO

Delegation from Peking University, led by Prof. Ye Jingyi, Vice Chairman of University Council, visited S.H. Ho College on 5th October 2012 to learn about the College’s system of student financial aid as well as its managerial experience. Other members of the delegation include Prof. Yang Aimin, Director of Office of Student Financial Aid and Mr. Chen Chunbao, Deputy Chief of Division of Exchange Programmes & Student Affairs. College Secretary of SHHO Mr. Andrew Lau received the delegation and introduced SHHO as a new college of CUHK. After the meetings and discussions, the delegation took tour around the campus. The delegates gained more information about the system of student financial aid in SHHO, and the visit also nurtured friendship between Peking University and S.H. Ho College.

Representatives of Northwest A&F University including Prof. Zhang Guangqiang, Director of School Affairs Commission; Prof. Zhao Zhong, Managing Vice President, and other 10 guests paid a visit to S.H. Ho College on 26 September 2012. Master Sun introduced the collegiate system of CUHK and SHHO’s 3-year experience in whole person education. The delegation was highly interested in student activities and member-student mentorship within the College. Delegation of China Agricultural University visited SHHO

Delegation of China Agricultural University led by Vice President Prof. Zhang Jiahua paid a visit to SHHO College on April 18, 2012. Visitors included Mr. Han Minjie, University Librarian and Ms. He Fon, Administration Director. The Delegation was received by the Master of the College, Prof. Samuel Sun, and was much impressed by the university collegiate system. Prof. Sun introduced the ideas of college and S.H. Ho College, followed by discussion, exchange, and a visit of the campus.
