Stories are about people; they can be happy or sad, but they never fail to move us. We work in diverse conditions, urban and rural, where the common thread is rethinking cultural heritage and through design create sustainable change.
Over the last 4 years we have developed a system where every prototype engages directly with local craftsmanship, addressing specific problems through direct local participation. The prototypes are also an ecosystem of workshops and collaborators. Our projects are built upon trust, through a system of workshop we can connect the young generation (students) with traditional communities where over time both parties can learn from one another.
Through community participation, public workshops, and direct fabrication by local craftmanship we have generated a new breed of design project that operates outside conventional design practices. Our journey is just started but so far we have learnt a valuable lesson that follows us in every project: people love to help others, ConditionLab facilitates this help to happen through design.

LISTEN, UNDERSTAND, COLLABORATE For too long design has been synonymous with high-end projects; in a realistic and humble way, ConditionLab tries to cater for the people who cannot afford design but where design can make real impact. ConditionLab is interested in making things happen. Each project we embark on follows a “slow” approach, where we listen, understand, and collaborate with the local community. Our focus is to create a “design story” not the “design object”.

THINKING IN PROTOTYPES Prototypes are the first iteration of an idea translated into a proposal. They contain the DNA of an idea but are not the final solution. Through prototypes we can provide solution that go beyond the predictable, they open the potential of design.
Over the last 4 years we have developed a system where every prototype engages directly with local craftsmanship, addressing specific problems through direct local participation. Our philosophy revolves around the paradox embedded into the word “condition”, as a noun it refers to a context, a circumstance, or a situation, while as a verb it implies change - to condition something based on an original state. In 2019 ConditionLab was awarded the Civic and Community building of the year for its Gaobu “Book House” project. Over the years we have developed a design and build process that aims to improve people’s lives through direct engagement with design.
Through community participation, public workshops, and direct fabrication by local craftmanship we have generated a new breed of design project that operates outside conventional design practices.
