Virtual Trainer for Improving Health & Fitness of Middle-aged adults
Prof HUI Sai Chuen Stanley
Middle-aged adults are in a critical stage in life in which they face many life challenges and bear many responsibilities. Majority of their time, resources and energy are spent on younger and older generations of their families; taking care of their own health is often not a priority. Their health therefore deteriorates exponentially since the onset of middle age.
It is well-documented that practising a physically active lifestyle is the best medicine to prevent and treat a multitude of diseases that commonly develop in middle-aged adults. The team developed a web-based Virtual Trainer (VT) programme to promote the adoption of active lifestyle among middle-aged adults. VT is available on a smartphone app and can be combined with wearable movement sensors (such as pedometers and heart rate monitors), so participants can be prescribed with effective exercise programmes and practically adopt an active lifestyle. Social media is also integrated that participants may share their results and be motivated to continue.
Participants would be motivated to practise a physically active lifestyle and achieve better health.
