Promotion and Prevention of Overactive Bladder and Voiding Dysfunction in community
Prof. NG Chi Fai
Overactive Bladder (OAB) and Voiding Dysfunction are common among the elderly. The symptoms - urinary frequency and urgency, nocturia and incontinence - can affect both physical and mental health of an individual. Not only bladder syndromes and voiding problems affect health and social life but it can also be life-threatening that nocturia increases fall and fracture rate, and fracture can lead to mortality in older people. It is commonly heard from older people saying urinary frequency and urgency, nocturia and incontinence are inevitable consequence of aging. In fact, OAB and voiding problems can be treatable, improvable and preventable. Lifestyle and dietary modifications or medical interventions can treat the disease. Physical health and quality of life of elderly can thus be improved.
Our project aims to deliver knowledge of Overactive Bladder and Voiding Dysfunction including: Causes, Consequences, Risk factors, Assessments, Treatments, Prevention, etc. to the elderly and caregivers. Urology doctors and nurses will go to elderly centres and elderly homes to give Community Talks and Train-the-Trainer Workshops respectively. Queries from elderly and caregivers will also be addressed. Every participant will be given a booklet summarising the talk or training workshop. The events will be recorded and posted on our website – CUHK Urology 探泌 www.urologycentre.com.hk that participants and the public can re-visit the events anytime.
The project will: Arouse public awareness and importance of urological health care in the community Achieve early detection and interventions of disease The targeted beneficiaries will: Be equipped with knowledge of Overactive Bladder and Voiding Dysfunction Be able to identify their severity of symptoms through assessments Be able and willing to apply lifestyle and dietary modifications We hope our project will not only help the improvement of individuals and health quality of the society, but could also help to decrease the strain to public health care system during the current limited health resource situation.
