• Our QFRM student Mr Cheung Chun Hin Angus was awarded the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence 2021/22.

  The CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence is a prestigious award that is presented annually to students with excellent academic achievements at entrance, academic results at CUHK, communication skills, track record of distinguished leadership and non-academic performance.

  The presentation ceremony was held on 28 Sept 2022.

• Young Researcher Award 2021: Prof. WEI Yingying

  The Award was established in 2002 with the aim of recognising the research achievements of young faculty members of the University, and nominations from each Faculty features a young faculty who produces the best research output for the award.

• Our former PhD student Dr. Yan Tingjin (currently an Assistant Professor in East China Normal University) who was supervised by Prof. Wong Hoi Ying was awarded the Science Faculty Postgraduate Research Output Award 2020/2021 in recognition of his remarkable and impressive accomplishment in research studies.

  The Faculty Award Ceremony will be hosted on 27 August 2022.

• Prof. CHAN Kin Wai has been awarded the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2021.

• Our QFRM student Mr Cheng Kak Chi (team Plutus) won the Awards for

  in the Joint-University Algo FX Trading Challenge 2021 (Global) organised by Algo Challenge Association.

• Our former PhD student Dr. Yan Tingjin (currently an Assistant Professor in East China Normal University) who was supervised by Prof. Wong Hoi Ying was awarded Itarle Scholarship 2020/21. Itarle is a sponsor of PhD awards at CUHK. The Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science each have an award for the Student with outstanding performance in their thesis. An internship at Itarle (Hong Kong) will also be offered to each prize winner.

• The Faculty’s annual postgraduate research day was held on Tuesday, 14 December 2021 in face-to-face mode. The event provided a platform for postgraduate students to gain exposure in the seminar, to present their innovative research results and to share research ideas and experiences.

  Two students of our department were presented on the event and they both won the Presentation Award.
  Champion: WANGWU Jiaxuan, Statistics PhD student. Presentation Title:
  scAMACE: Model-Based Approach to the Joint Analysis of Single-Cell Data on Chromatin Accessibility, Gene Expression and Methylation.

  Second Runner-up: LEUNG Cheuk Wai, Dominic, Risk Management Science MPhil student. Presentation Title: Testing Variance Change under Varying Mean Structure.

• Professor Wong Hoi Ying has been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award 2020 and the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2020 in recognition of his distinguished teaching performance. The Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award is a prestigious award that is presented annually to outstanding teachers of the University, one from each of the eight Faculties and the General Education programme. • Professor CHAN Ngai Hang was awarded Journal of Time Series Analysis Distinguished Author Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the journal, based on publications appearing in Volumes 1–41 inclusive. • Professor CHAN Kin Wai has been awarded  the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award, CUHK (2019) and Early Career Award, Research Grants Council, Hong Kong (2019), in recognition of his distinguished teaching performance and outstanding research talent.

• Prof. Yingying Wei and her former PhD student Dr. Xiangyu Luo (currently an Assistant Professor in Renmin University of China) have been awarded the W. J. Youden Award in Interlaboratory Testing in JSM 2019 for their publication “Batch Effects Correction with Unknown Subtypes, Journal of the American Statistical Association, 114 (526) 581-594.”

• Mr. Fangda Song (Supervisor: Prof. Yingying Wei) has been awarded the 2019 ASA Section on Statistics in Genomics and Genetics’ Distinguished Student Paper.
• Title of paper: Flexible experimental designs for valid single-cell RNA-sequencing experiments allowing batch effects correction

• Professor Chan Kin Wai received Early Career Award 2019/20 from Research Grants Council. Among the 166 approved projects of the Early Career Scheme, seven projects were rated “outstanding” and also had their education plans rated “satisfactory”. The Principal Investigators of these seven outstanding projects would receive “The Early Career Award 2019/20” and also additional funding for engaging in educational activities.

• Professor Wong Hoi Ying has been appointed as Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Science on a concurrent basis with effect from 1 August 2019. The University will provide $50,000/year to Professor Wong for 5 years to support his research activities.

• Dr. John Alexander Wright has been awarded the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2018.

• Professor Wong Hoi Ying has been awarded “The IMA Journal of Management Mathematics Best Paper of 2018” for the paper entitled “Optimal Investment for Insurers with Correlation Risk: Risk Aversion and Investment Horizon”. It is the annual prize for the best paper published in the IMA Journal of Management Mathematics. The award was presented in the summer of 2019.

• The team of Science and Engineering graduates has won the National Winner in the ‘International Quant Championship 2018’ held in Beijing in July 2018. The team would compete in the Global Final to be held in Singapore.
  Besides, Statistics major student Ho, Ngok Chao has awarded the Outstanding Students Award 2018.

• Professor WEI Yingying has been awarded the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2017.

• Professor Lin Yuanyuan has been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award and the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2016. The VC’s Exemplary Teaching Award is a prestigious award that is presented annually to outstanding teachers of the University, one from each of the eight Faculties and the General Education programme. The awardees’ achievements in teaching are considered by their peers and students to be of the highest order. This award was presented at the 83rd Congregation scheduled for 16 November 2017.

• Professor WONG Hoi Ying has been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award and the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2015. The VC’s Exemplary Teaching Award is a prestigious award that is presented annually to outstanding teachers of the University, one from each of the eight Faculties and the General Education programme. The awardees’ achievements in teaching are considered by their peers and students to be of the highest order. This award was presented at the 81st Congregation scheduled for 17 November 2016.

• Congratulations to our Year-3 QFRM student XI Yiru on awarding the first prize at the 2015 Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM). Yiru joined the competition with another two CUHK students from Math major and CS major. The CUMCM is an annual national competition, and is one of the largest mathematical competitions in modeling.

• Professor Shao Qiman has been appointed as Choh-Ming Li Professor of Statistics with effect from 1 August 2015 in recognition of his distinguished scholastic performance. The University will provide $100,000/year to Professor Shao for 5 years to support his academic and research activities.

• Mr. Pun Chi-seng, our Year 3 Statistics PhD student, recently won the 2015 Best Student Research Paper Award for a paper he presented at the 2015 Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, the USA. This is the first time ever a PhD student from the Asia Pacific region has won this international competition. Mr. Pun Chi-seng’s award winning paper entitled “Combined Estimation-Optimization (CEO) Approach for High Dimensional Portfolio Selection. • • Professor Poon Wai Yin has been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award and the Faculty Exemplary Teaching Award 2013. The VC’s Exemplary Teaching Award is a prestigious award that is presented annually to outstanding teachers of the University, one from each of the eight Faculties and the General Education programme. The awardees’ achievements in teaching are considered by their peers and students to be of the highest order. This award was presented at the 76th Congregation scheduled for 20 November 2014.
  • In addition, Professor Poon has been appointed as Outstanding Fellow of the Faculty of Science on a concurrent basis with effect from 1 August 2014. The University will provide $50,000/year to Professor Poon for 5 years to support her research activities.
