【Campus Tour – New Asia Amphitheatre】

Let us take you to another College landmark this time: the New Asia Amphitheatre! A fan-shaped open-air plaza surrounded by curved echo stone walls on two sides, it is one of the original facilities of the current Shatin campus. The circular design stems from the Rotunda of the Farm Road Campus, hoping it would also become a place for teachers and students to congregate. Many College activities such as orientation camps, evening parties, singing contests, graduation photo-taking were held at the Amphitheatre. It is also the starting and finishing points of the annual Happy Run.

Introduction of the New Asia Amphitheatre in the January 1992 issue of CUHK Newsletter.
In September 1990, then College Head Professor Lin Tzong-biau and then College Trustee Mr. Lee Kam Chung officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the graduate plaques.

The metal plaques engraved with graduate names first appeared on the walls of the Amphitheatre in September 1990 during the 41st Anniversary celebration. 14 plaques in total carrying the names of graduates from 1952 to 1989 were inlaid on the walls. The College has maintained this tradition of engraving graduate names ever since. By 2015, due to the lack of space, the College collaborated with the Alumni Association on the expansion project of the Amphitheatre. The construction completed in November 2019. Three new stone walls were added which can accommodate more names until 2064. The Alumni Association will generously support the cost of engraving.

There are two more icons at the Amphitheatre. Erected on the lawn is the sculpture by renowned sculptor Mr. Tong King-sum. It was dedicated to his mother and later re-gifted to the College. There is also the “Freedom Forum” on the side of the stone wall facing the Chien Mu Library where students would put up posters expressing their opinions.

The Amphitheatre is a very special place to generations of New Asia graduates. Hope that you all can come back and visit us sometime!
