6 嘉年良辰且盡歡 significance of research undertaken at CUHK, and its compatibility with its partnering organizations. Details of what we achieved during the year 2012–13 are amply described in the chapter on ‘Pushing Knowledge Frontiers’ of this Report. Caring and Serving The Chinese University continued to inculcate among its students a strong sense of social commitment, and the notion that the University does not, and certainly cannot, exist without being an integral part of the community that, without putting it too bluntly, pays for it in hard cash, and sustains its growth with a lot of loving care and moral support. Through informal education and extra-curricular activities, the University has, in subtle and multifarious ways, sought to heighten students’ awareness of their role in relation to others in this city, this nation and this world, and how our students may offer help to those who do not enjoy the same privileged existence as they do, through service and other forms of giving. I am very glad to be able to report here that, after some assiduous efforts in the past two years, there are now a lot more students who are convinced of their own potential to impact the lives of others, and who have become more caring: caring for their fellow citizens, for their compatriots, for others who inhabit the earth, and for the generations to come by showing a deeper understanding of environmental issues.
