Organized for the second time this year by the Committee on Health Promotion and Protection (CHPP) with the support of various university units, the event aims at promoting exercise as a means to a healthier life and acquainting University members with scenic spots on campus. ‘The turn-out at the campaign’s debut in March was much better than we had expected,’ says Prof. Jack Cheng, chairman of the CHPP and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University. ‘The suggestion was then made by many participants, students and staff inclusive, that it be held again in autumn when the weather is most suited to walking. Besides, the participants were pleased that the event took them to places on campus they had never before visited.’ The route will start from the University train station, winding through Chung Chi College and Main Campus, to end at the lecture theatre of Shaw College. It is expected to take less than 40 minutes and there will be nine check-points along the way. A launch ceremony will be held at 9 am, and it will be officiated by Prof. Cheng, Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Lee Shiu-hung, emeritus professor of community medicine, Prof. Michael Hui, Associate Pro- Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lam Kin-che, chairman of the University Steering Committee on Environment, and the heads of the four constituent Colleges. Of the four Colleges, Shaw is furthest away from the train station. The train station-Shaw route is selected to show University members how quickly and enjoyably a seemingly long journey can be covered on foot, explains Prof. Cheng. It also passes through some of the most picturesque and interesting spots on 安步強體走校園 Walking Campaign II: Exercise in Campus Appreciation campus, namely, Alumni Path and the Chinese Medicine Garden, which commuters used to driving or taking the bus may have overlooked. Each participant will receive a souvenir package prepared by the University Health Service, an important co-organizer of the event. It will contain a tee-shirt, bottled water, and a measuring tape. The aim of including the tape is to draw attention to central obesity which is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other health problems. ‘Do not forget we share our campus with an amazing variety of birds and trees. The campaign integrates physical exercise with campus appreciation and awareness of nature,’ observes Prof. Cheng. ‘As such, it promotes not only physical health, but mental and environmental health as well.’ Hopefully, the Walking Campaign will eventually become an annual or biannual exercise, and produce health-conscious staff and students who will walk their talk. 報名查詢 Registration and enquiries:2609 6428 截止日期 Deadline:26 – 10 – 2007 網址 Website : http://perntc.per.cuhk.edu.hk/ personnel/crsreg/crslist_misc.asp?crs=oth
