The U n i v e r s i ty a n d its c o n s t i t u e nt colleges r u n a v a r i e t y of d i s t i n g u i s h ed professorship/fellowship schemes w h i ch b r i ng outstanding scholars to the campus each year. Their pub l i c lectures a nd seminars invigorate the intellectual c ommu n i ty o f H o n g K o n g a n d generate beneficial academic exchanges. P r om i n e nt guests d u r i ng the yea r included No b el laureate Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn, wo r l d - r e n own ed pathologist Prof. A n d r ew Wy l l i e, respected physicist Prof. Le o P. Ka d a n o f f, em i nent h i s t o r i an Prof. C Wa r r en Hollister, and distinguished psychologist Prof. J. A . Scott Kelso. The local c ommu n i ty is we ll served by the University's School of Co n t i n u i ng Studie s wh i c h has made availabl e continuing education and professional education programmes to the general publi c for the past 31 years. I n 1995-96, over 30,000 students benefited f r om the School's general courses a nd its v a r i ous degree, d i p l oma, certificate , a nd distance education programmes, as we l l as joint programmes w i t h universitie s i n ma i n l and China and overseas. The A r t Mu s e um of the Un i v e r s i ty helps to enrich the cultural life of H o n g K o ng b y p r omo t i n g the app r e c i a t i on of Chinese art t h r o u gh its exhibitions, pub l i c a t i on s, a nd seminars. Ov er 30,000 people v i ewed its exhibition s i n the past year. The e x h i b i t i on of T h e Wo r l d of Wo n g Po-yeh' feature d H o n g K o ng landscapes of the 1950s and 1960s; the 'Cheng X u n Tan g Collection of Painting and Ca l l i g r aphy on Fans' demonstrated the rich variety of painting s and calligraphy o n fans by artists of the M i n g and Q i ng periods; and The A r t of Ju Chao and Ju Lian', organized i n collaboration w i t h the Guangdong Provincial Mu s e um and Guang z hou A r t Mu s eum, exhibited 234 masterpieces by the t wo Guangdong masters. I n addition, an exhibition titled ' Mode rn Paintings b y Gu a n g d o ng Artists', jointly o r gan i z ed w i t h the H o n g K o n g Economic an d Trade Office a nd the Osaka Mu n i c i p al Mu s e um of A r t , was held at Osaka t o promot e the appreciation and stud y of the art of the L i ngnan School. The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty Press offered 13 n e w titles to the reading public i n its general books p u b l i c a t i on p r o g r amme. There we re also 20 titles of o r i g i n al academic wo r k s, dictionaries and teaching materials, four audio-visual educational programmes, and three journals. They represented significant contributions of k n ow l e d ge to the c ommu n i ty at large.
