Secretary: Mrs. Ho Wan Siu-wan (assigned by the Registrar) Professor D.C, Lau Honoured Professor D.C. Lau of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Hong Kong at its 136th congregation on 21st March. Professor Lau is famed for his significant contributions in the fields of Chinese language studies and comparative philosophy. He was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by this University in 1975. Jockey Club Supports Biotechnology Project The Royal Ho ng Ko ng Jockey C l ub has approved a generous donation of HK$170 million to the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology to be built on the campus of the University. This donation is part of a HK$300 million commitment that the Jockey Club has approved for the support of the Hong Kong biotechnology project. The donation is used to finance the construction of a building to house the activities of the institute, and to support some of the operating costs of the institute for the first five years. Surgery (Otolaryngology) Training at Prince of Wales Hospital Gains Recognition The Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of E d i n b u r gh has g r an t ed r e c o g n i t i on o f the pre-fellowship training of two registrar (medical o f f i c e r) posts in the Depa r tment of Surgery (otolaryngology) at the Prince of Wales Hospital with effect from April 1989. Ma Ying-pui Mass Spectrometer Room Opened The Ma Ying-pui Mass Spectrometer Room formally opened on 20th April. Dr. Ma Pui Han officiated at the plaque-unveiling ceremony which was attended by over forty guests including members of the Ma family, professional chemists and other scientists. Since 1987, Dr. Ma and her relatives have pledged generous donations totalling HK$1.5 million to the University, of which about one-third was used to upgrade the data system of the mass spectrometer at the Chemistry Department. The newly named Ma Ying-pui Mass Spectrometer Room of the Chemistry Department is situated in the basement of the south block of the University's Science Centre. The added facilities contained therein will enable the Chemistry Department to enhance its research and teaching activities in mass spectrometry. Council Appointments * Professor T.B. L in has been reappointed head of New Asia College for a further period of three years from 1st August, 1989. * Professor S.W. Tam has been reappointed dean of the Graduate School for a further term of one year from 1st September, 1989. New Faculty Deans The f o l l ow i ng members of staff have been elected dean of their respective faculties for a term of three years: * Dr. Ho Hsiu-hwang, reader in philosophy, as dean of arts, succeeding Dr. Philip Shen, from 1st August, 1989. * Professor Teik-ewe Oh, professor of anaesthesia and intensive care, as dean of medicine, succeeding Professor Joseph C.K. Lee, from 1st July, 1989. * Dr. Kuan Hsin-chi, reader in government and public administration, as dean of social science, succeeding Professor Rance Pui-leung Lee, from 1st August, 1989. Current deans of business administration and science are Professor Mun Kin-chok and Professor Y.W. Lam respectively.
