A territory-wide school-based sleep health education and intervention campaign is initiated by the Departments of Psychiatry, Paediatrics, and Medicine and Therapeutics, CUHK. The campaign's targets are local primary and secondary schools students, and the aim of the clinical team is to cultivate a healthy sleeping habit in younger generations, thereby enhancing students' physical and mental well-being, academic performance and behaviour.
Research findings have shown that inadequate sleep among school-age children and adolescents is associated with minor mood disorders, behavioural problems, and poor academic results. Pathological researches suggest that shortage of sleep will give rise to metabolic and endocrine disorders, increase risk for cardiovascular diseases, obesity and diabetic problems, and affect daytime cognitive function.
