In 1976, the University held its Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees at the University Mall for the first time. To provide sun shade and shelter from rain, CUHK purchased eight large marquees at a cost of HK$100,000 in 1978. These marquees have become a permanent feature of the ceremony.
