The United College admitted for the first time a totally blind undergraduate student in this academic year. The student, who majors in social work, resides in a College hostel. With the aim of improving the support to students with visual impairment, Prof. Dennis K.P. Ng, University Dean of Students; Prof. Joyce Ma, chairperson of the Department of Social Work; Dr. Chan Tak-yau, warden of the Bethlehem Hall; and colleagues from the Office of Student Affairs of the University and Dean of Students’ Office of United College made a visit to the Hong Kong Blind Union on 9 November 2012. During the visit, Ms. Scarlette Cheng of the Trailwalker Vocational and Educational Resources Centre of the Union briefed the CUHK visitors on the electronic devices and software available for people with visual impairment, and gave them a demonstration of the use of the screen reading software NVDA. Ms. Cheng also shared the Union’s experience in assisting visually impaired students studying in other higher institutions with the CUHK visitors.
