Prof. H e n ry N.C. Wong, current college h e a d , p o i n t s o u t t h a t N e w A s i a is c h a r a c t e r i z ed b y a N e w A s i a s p i r i t as expressed i n the l y r i cs of the schoo l s o n g: ‘ M y hands are emp ty a nd the r o ad is long, no end in sight; hardships I p u l l t h r o u g h, in weariness I keep m y spirit.' The lyrics reflect t he d i f f i c u l t i es o f t he e a r ly y e a r s o f the college, a nd the b r e a d th of m i n d a nd deep feelings it expresses are ideals of h u m a n life t h a t h a d i m p e l l e d s t u d e n ts to w o r k f o r society a nd s t r i ve f or the e n h a n c eme nt of Chinese culture. Th ey still resound today. ‘The college s y s t em is s o m e t h i ng of w h i c h w e at C U H K can be p r o u d. It strengthens s t u d e n t s' sense of b e l o n g i n g a n d d r aws o ur a l u m ni together. ' H e p r a i s e d the s p i r i t of s c h o l a r s h ip practised i n Sung-dynasty academies, w h i c h w a s b o t h a w a y of s c h o l a r s h ip a n d a w a y of life. Students s t u d i ed o n t h e ir o w n a nd learnt f r om each other. To p r omo te a climate of s c h o l a r s h ip a m o n g N e w A s ia staff a nd students, a nd to encourage students t o take p a r t i n exchange p r o g r amme s, Prof. Wo n g has s p e c i a l ly allocated g r a n ts f or h o l d i ng conferences and forums. N e w Asia's unique H u i Ga l l e ry was set u p to s u p p o rt c u l t u r al a n d artistic activities.
