Kao, who was away on business in Japan. Colleges Celebrate Founders' Day Three constituent Colleges of the University celebrated their anniversaries in September and October 1987. New Asia College celebrated its thirty- eighth anniversary as well as the 2538th birthday of Confucius (Teachers' Day) on 25th and 26th September; Chung Chi College its thirty-sixth Founders' Day on 30th October. United College held its thirty-first anniversary ceremony on 23rd October, and its celebrating programmes spanned from September to November. Celebration programmes of the colleges included scholarship/prize awarding ceremonies, dinners, round-the-campus races, as well as other sports, recreational and academic activities. Obituary The University records with deep sadness the passing away of Dr. Yung Chi Tung, formerly a Pro-Vice- Chancellor of the University (1963-65 and 1969-71), President (1960-75) and later Emeritus President of Chung Chi College, on 26th November, 1987. Born in Hong Kong in 1908 ， Dr. Yung studied Chinese classics under private tuition before he entered the Lingnan Middle School. He received his BS degree in Biology in 1929 from National Tsinghua University in Peking and taught at his alma mater. In 1935, Tsinghua sponsored Dr. Yung for further studies at the University of Chicago. He won a China Foundation fellowship in 1936 ， and received his PhD degree in Botany in the following year. Returning to China, Dr. Yung taught first at National Northwestern University in Sian and later at Lingnan University in Canton. He held at different periods the positions of Professor and Head of the Biology Department, Acting Dean of Science, and Acting Dean of Studies of Lingnan University. In 1944 ， Dr. Yung was a Visiting Professor i n the United States. Dr. Yung joined the University o f Hong Kong in 1951 as a Senior Lecturer in Botany and later became Head of the Department. He was installed as the President of Chung Chi College in 1960 and served in that office until his retirement in 1975. When Chung Chi College joined New Asia College and United College to establish The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1963, Dr. Yung was appointed the first Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University. He made valuable contributions to the initial planning of the University, and offered his leadership and efforts to the development of the University throughout its formative years. Dr. Yung also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Polytechnic in its early years, taking active part in the development of tertiary-level technological education in Hong Kong. In recognition of his exemplary public service and his contributions to higher education, Dr. Yung was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by both local Universities. He was also made an Officer of the Order o f the British Empire and a Justice of the Peace. Upon his retirement in 1975 ， Dr. Yung was conferred the title of Emeritus President of Chung Chi College by the College Board of Trustees and remained closely associated with the College and the University. Dr. Yung was a devoted Christian and a staunch supporter of the local churches. He will be remembered for his outstanding contributions and dedicated service to this University and as President of one of its foundation Colleges. His departure signifies the loss of a veteran leader in higher education in Hong Kong, as well as an eminent scientist and teacher who will be affectionately remembered by his numerous students, colleagues, and friends. 14
