News in Brief 21 Prof. Dennis Y.M. Lo (Department of Chemical Pathology) who was awarded the Medical Research Fellowship. The awards were presented by Prof. Zhou Guangzhao, chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology. Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung, chairman of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, CUHK, was conferred the 2005 Cheung Kong Achievement Award, being the only Hong Kong scholar to have won the honour. The presentation of the Cheung Kong Achievement Awards and the appointment of Cheung Kong Scholars took place in a ceremony held on 29 March in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Prof. Jia Jiamin of the Department of Marketing and Prof. Joseph Chan of the School of Journalism and Communication, were also appointed as Cheung Kong Chair Professors at the same ceremony. The Cheung Kong Scholars Programme was jointly established by China’s Ministry of Education and the Li Ka Shing Foundation in 1998. The application and selection process of the award takes place twice a year, and the professors receive a special stipend of RMB100,000 in addition to the regular remuneration package offered by the University in accordance with state guidelines. Sung and up to RMB 1 million. This year, Prof. Joseph J.Y. Sung was bestowed the second prize and awarded RMB500,000. Prof. Samuel Sun, professor of biology, has been named one of the 2005 Leaders of the Year (education/research) by the Singtao Group. Attending the awards ceremony on 28th March at the Grand Hyatt were Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Rafael Hui, Chief Secretary for Administration, Henry Tang, Financial Secretary, and Michael Suen, Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands. • Wisers Knowledge Management and Content Service System (Wi s ers System),developed by Prof. William Wong Kam-fa i, professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, has received the Innovation Award of the China Computer Federation. TheChineseUniversity is the only university outside mainland China to win the award. The Innovation Award is set up by the China Computer Federation on behalf of the Ministry of Science and Technology to recognize important technological discoveries and breakthroughs in basic and applied research in computer engineering. •
