The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the 4th “The D. H. Chen Foundation Scholars Roundtable Discussion” on Tuesday, 1 June 2021, providing a platform for the scholars of the cohorts 2019/20 and 2020/21 to gather together. The event was graced by the presence of Ms. Karen Cheung, Trustee and Chief Strategist of The D. H. Chen Foundation (the Foundation), Mr. Peter Poon, Chief Program Officer of the Foundation, Ms. Polly Cheng, Program Manager of the Foundation, Mr. Jeremy Lok, Program Executive of the Foundation, Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, Professor Wong Suk-ying, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid of CUHK, Ms. Lolitta Wong, Director of Institutional Advancement of CUHK and Ms. Fanny Yuen, Assistant Director of Admissions and Financial Aid of CUHK.

Professor Wong Suk-ying delivered her welcoming speech on behalf of CUHK and expressed her sincerest gratitude to the Foundation for their continued trust in the University and unwavering support to the local tertiary education. She also encouraged the scholars to study hard and to serve local and international society with their knowledge. Seven scholars shared their university lives and plans for the future with the distinguished guests. They also exchanged ideas with the guests and benefited greatly from the roundtable discussion.

In 2015, the Foundation established “The D. H. Chen Foundation Scholarship” which annually awards around twenty outstanding undergraduate students from various local universities, offering tuition fees, and living and overseas exchange subsidies. The scholars are also offered a wide range of activities, including social services, mentorship programmes, annual reception and roundtable meetings, in a bid to broaden their global horizons and inspire them to drive community and social development.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the seventh “Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship Presentation Ceremony” on Tuesday, 10 November 2020. Facing the unprecedented challenge brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was for its first time held online via Zoom. The ceremony was officiated by Mr Thomas Liang, Chief Executive of the Wei Lun Foundation, and Professor Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK. Miss Michelle Liang and members of the advisory committee for the Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship Endowment Fund also joined this gratifying moment.

In his welcoming address, Professor Fok Tai-fai expressed his earnest gratitude on behalf of CUHK for the unfailing support of the late Dr the Honourable Lee Quo-wei, as well as the Lee Family and the Wei Lun Foundation. He also praised and encouraged all awardees to cherish the honour and follow Dr Lee’s legacy to make the community a better place in future.

A total of 33 outstanding students have been awarded the “Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship” this year. On behalf of all scholarship recipients, Cheung Man-hin thanked the Lee family and the Wei Lun Foundation for their generous donation to establish the Scholarship which fuels their motivation to continue the endeavour beyond fields of study.

Celebrating the Golden Jubilee of CUHK in 2013, the “Lee Quo Wei CUHK Golden Jubilee Scholarship Endowment Fund” was established to award medical students, law students and Mainland students with excellent academic achievement, and also support the students with financial needs for the exchange programmes.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) launched the CU RElief Fund (Fund) to help University members overcome difficulties and financial problems imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, and to bolster their resilience. Under the enthusiastic support from alumni, faculty, and various sectors and organisations, CUHK has created more than 300 job and internship opportunities within two months.

The job opportunities open for CUHK members include short-term on-campus job opportunities for graduating students of the class of 2020 and alumni of the class of 2019, short-term job and summer internship opportunities offered by various sectors and organisations, and also on-campus jobs with allowance for current CUHK full-time undergraduate students whose families are adversely affected by the pandemic.

The above-mentioned positions are now being matched to the requirements of applicants and recruiters. Applicants who receive job offers will start working in July. The summer internship programme will begin next week, while those off-campus short-term job opportunities are still accepting applications from graduating students and alumni.

The Fund thanks all donors for their generous support and calls on all sectors of society to provide job opportunities continuously. At the same time, it is hoped that the members of the public will consider donating all or part of the money received under the HK$10,000 Government’s Cash Payout Scheme to the Fund.

About the CU RElief Fund

To cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CUHK members, CUHK launched the CU RElief Fund on 20 April 2020, which aims to provide assistance and support to members who are adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and to enhance the resilience of the CUHK community. It offers job opportunities to current students and alumni of the classes of 2019 and 2020 to help them gain work experience and competitiveness. It also provides interest-free emergency loans for full-time staff members in junior posts (on Terms of Service C and equivalent terms) to ease their families’ financial difficulties.
