Staff Profiles Dr. Charles K. Kao, Reader in Electronics, United College Dr. Charles K. Kao 士 博 錕 高 Dr. Charles K. Kao, born in Shanghai, received his secondary education at St. Joseph's College, Hong Kong. In 1953, he wen t to study in England where he obtained his B. Sc. (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering from the University of London in 1957. After graduating from the University, Dr. Kao joined Standard Telephones& Cables Limited in London, where he recieved post-graduate industrial training for one year before becoming an engineer in the Microwave Division. During this part of his career he wrote his first paper for which he was awarded the Graduate Student Section Prize (1959) by the Institution of Electrical Engineers. In early 1961 Dr. Kao was offered a research post at the Company's associate research division, Standard Telecommunication Laboratories Ltd., Harlow, England. He earned his Ph.D. from University College, University of London, in 1965 with a thesis entitle d "An Overmoded Waveguide System" whilst he was working at S.T.L. He also found time to deliver specialist lecture courses a t various universities and in 1968 he was promoted to Principal Research Engineer, In the latter years with S.T.L. and until his departure to join this University, Dr. Kao contributed much to the research into optical communication systems. He was responsible for the introduction of fibre optical waveguides which started world-wide effort of research into this area and he is internationally known for his work in this field. Dr. Kao has published over thirty papers on the subject of optical communication an d other related fields, some of whic h have been presented at various international conferences. Dr. Kao is a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and has been active in committee work connected with the I.E.E. and othe r professional institutions. He was a member of the official United Kingdom delegation to the U.R.S.I. (Union Radio Scientific International) General Assembly in Ottawa, Canada in 1969. He was appointed Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Queen Mary College, University of London in 1969. Dr. Kao has been retained as a consultant by S.T.L. Dr. Ambrose Yeo-chi King, Lecturer in Sociology, New Asia College Dr. Ambrose Yeo-chi King 士 博 基 耀 金 Dr. Ambrose Yeo-chi King, born in Chekiang, China, obtained a B.A. in Law at National Taiwan University in 1957 , an M.A. in Political Science at National Chengchi University in 1959 , and an M.A. in Public Administrat and a Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh in 1965 and 1970. Before joining this University in 1970 , Dr. King had worked as Instructor at National Chengchi University, Associate Editor-in-Chief at Taiwan Commercial Press Ltd., and Editor-in-Chief of Eastern Miscellany, a monthly magazine. —6—
