The University held its Twenty-first Congregation for the conferment of honorary degrees and other degrees at the University campus on 6th December , 1979. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Dr. M a Lin, presided at the ceremony, which was attended by over 3,700 guests and parents. Three eminent persons were awarded the honorary doctoral degrees by the University. Professor W. H. Trethowan, Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa; Mr. T. C. Cheng, who was President of United College, Director of the School of Education and Pro-Vice- Chancellor of this University until recently, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa; and Dr. Y. C. Wong, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Hong Kong and a Council member of this University was awarded the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa. Professor W. H. Trethowan addressed the Congregation on behalf of the honorary graduates. The Public Orator was Dr. Byron Weng, Senior Lecturer in Government and Public Administration. This year, 1,041 graduates received their Master's and Bachelor's degrees, including 47 Masters of Philosophy, 32 Masters of Business Administration, 2 Masters of Divinity, 5 Masters of Social Work, 1 Master of Arts, 5 Masters of Arts (Education), 243 Bachelors of Arts, 174 Bachelors of Business Administra 230 Bachelors of Science, and 302 Bachelors of Social Science.
