Conference Series International Conference on Cooperation and Competition in the Asia-Pacific Regions The Japan Study Programme of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies of the University hosted an international conference on 'Cooperation and Competition in the Asia-Pacific Regions' on 2nd and 3rd May at the University's Cho Yiu Conference Hall. The conference was divide d into eight sessions. Chairmen of various sessions included Dr. Kuan Hsin-chi, Dr. Peter N.S. Lee, Dr. Tam Yue-hi m and Dr. Byron Weng of the University. About twenty papers were presented, which analysed the present situation and prospect of cooperation and competition in the Asia-Pacific region from the economic, political, military and cultura l points o f views. Scholars submitting papers at the conference included Bai Chengqi, Chen Jianan, Ge Linsheng, Hong Yuan-peng, Shi Yuequn, Xiao Xiangqian and Zhu Mingquan from China; Liao Kuang-sheng, Geral d Chan, Fong Chee Ming-choo and Li Yiu-nam from Hong Kong; Kagami Mitsuyuki and Liu Shinkei from Japan; Chang Pao-min fro m Singapore; Chang Rong-feng, Chang Hu and Hsing Kuo-chiang from Taiwan; and Parris Chang and Hsueh Chun-tu from the United States. International Management Conference 一 Managing in a Global Economy The Faculty of Business Administration of the University and the Eastern Academy of Management (EAM) jointly organized an internationa l conference on 'Managing i n a Global Economy' from 12th to 15th June, 1989 at the Regal Riverside Hotel, Shatin. E AM is the regional affiliate of the 7,000- member Academy of Management in the United States. In 1985, EA M initiated the first of a series of biennial international conferences jointly sponsored with overseas host institutions as a dialogue among management scholars and executives on a worldwide basis. The first two conferences were held in the Netherlands and Greece. This year, the University was chosen to host the third conference, and this manifests the fact that management scholars and the world business community are becoming more and more aware of Hong Kong's role in Asian-Pacific and world business. About 150 scholars and senior business executives from the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries in Europe and Asia participated i n this conference. Professor Baysung Hsu, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University officiated at the opening ceremony on 12th June. Mr. Ian MacCallum, past president of the Law Society of Hong Kong, presented a keynote speech on 'Managemen t in Hong Kong - From Uncertainty to Uncertainty'. Other keynote speakers included Professor Donald Hellriegel, past president of the Academy of Management; Professor Martin Gannon, past president and fellow of the EAM; and Professor K.C. Mun, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration of the University. Over 100 academic papers were presented at the conference. In addition, three panels were also arranged (panelists in brackets): (1) Hong Kong's Role in a Global Economy (Dr. Joseph Cheng, dean of the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong; Dr. C.K. Law, deputy director of Economic Research, B.T. Brokerage (Asia) Ltd.; and Dr. Michael Bond, reader in psychology of the University); (2) Perspectives o n Boarder Economies (Professor Jose I gnac io Hernandez Luna, Monterrey Institute of Engineering, Mexico; and Mr. H.F. Chan, managing director, Convex Company Ltd. Hong Kong); an d (3) Doing Business Across the Pacific Rim (Dr. Daniel Ng, managing director, McDonald' s Restaurant (HK ) Ltd.; Dr. Charles Steilen, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Dr. Clint Laurent, management consultant, Price Waterhouse Management Consultants). The organizers also arranged tw o on-site corporate visits and discussion sessions with senior managers of the two loca l corporations, M.C . Packaging (Hong Kong) Ltd. and Computer Products Asia-Pacific Ltd. Dr. M.K . Nyaw of the Faculty of Business Administration of the University was the co-chairman of the conference. 12
