Organised by this Centre and supported by The Office of the Arts Administrator, the I·CARE Theatre is presenting to you a fine selection of films again after suspending for one year and a half. Starting from September 2021, there will be a monthly screening of: Drifting by a young director and an alumnus of this University; There is No Evil, a reward winning movie produced in Iran; and Life is Fruity, a Japanese documentary.
Everyone seems to play a tiny role in the society, but could still manage to make an impact on others’ lives. Encountering inequality at work, would you stand up for others or follow the regulations and orders? When your job goes against your mission, would you choose to quit? Let’s check out the protagonists’ decision in these films.

Synopsis
Under the flyovers of Sham Shui Po lived a group of down-and-outs. One winter night, the authorities cleared all their personal belongings while they were sleeping. Ms. Ho, a young social worker, helped them take to court to demand compensation for their losses. Could the homeless survive the winter under the chaotic flyovers before justice and compensation would have arrived?
This film is shortlisted in “Big Screen Competition” of the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2021.

Synopsis
In Iran, hundreds of prisoners were executed every year, of whom many were dissidents. Very often, the executioners were only ordinary citizens performing military service. This film features four narratives, each of which depicted how the principal characters made up their minds whether or not to obey the inhumane orders. The characters are i) a middle-aged man with a happy family; ii) a new recruit who executed death penalty for the very first time; iii) a young man preparing to celebrate her girlfriend’s birthday; and iv) a retired doctor retreating to the countryside. Each of them had made different decisions and hence led to different paths.
This film won the Golden Bear at the 70th Berlin Film Festival.

Synopsis
The 90-year-old architect Shuichi Tsubata had once been involved in a new town development project in Japan when he was young, in the hope of developing a community that coexists with the nature. However, his aspiration was not in line with the economic-first policy at that time. He then built his own cozy wooden house making reference to the one proudly constructed by his master, Antonin Raymond. This documentary showcases the simple and self-sufficient life of Tsubata and his wife, who have been living a leisure and simple life for decades. The couple have been devoted to opening up the various possibilities of life.
This documentary received the 1st prize under the Cultural Section of the 91st Kinema Junpo Best Film of The Year Award.

Remarks:
All films for screening will be opened to CUHK members (students, staff and alumni) and the public.
All screenings are free-of-charge.
Admission for registered participants will start 30 minutes before the screening. Please reserve ample time for registration at the University entrance (if necessary), and for temperature check and health declaration.
Free seating is made on a first-come-first-served basis.
Drifting is only suitable for persons aged 18 or above. Please bring along your HKID card for verification.
Walk-in participants (if any) will be admitted five minutes before the screening.
Any form of photo taking and video recording are prohibited.
