Jeffrey Hill is a Professional Consultant in the Faculty of law, who has over 20 years of experience teaching law at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He teaches criminal law and family law on the LLB, JD and PCLL programmes.
Jeff was called to the Bar of England and Wales by Gray’s Inn in 1997. After call, he worked as an adjunct lecturer at a number of academic institutions, before taking up a post as Legal Adviser/employed barrister at Oxford Magistrates’ Court. During these years, he advised Magistrates in criminal and family courts across Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley and had special responsibility for cases involving Football Banning Orders and for the taxation of costs from central funds.
Jeff was Senior Lecturer in Law at Manchester Law School, Manchester Metropolitan University, for over 15 years, where he still holds the post of Visiting Senior Lecturer. During this time, he had responsibility for Manchester Law School’s mooting and advocacy activity. During his time at Manchester Law School, he taught a number of subjects, including criminal law, mooting, family law, and the law of tort. In 2017, he was nominated by Manchester Law School for the UK Law Teacher of the Year award. Prior to his appointment in the Faculty of Law in 2020, he was also Visiting Lecturer at Hong Kong University for 15 years, where he lectured in criminal law and tort.
Jeff’s primary teaching and writing interests are in the fields of criminal law, mooting and family law. He is a frequent international speaker on mooting and is the author of The Practical Guide to Mooting, now in its second edition (Hart Publishing). He is also an editor for Halsbury’s Laws of Hong Kong and the author/editor of a wide range of criminal law and litigation manuals /materials published by CILEX Law School.
Jeff is a member of the Advisory Board for the Essex Court Chambers/ English Speaking Union National Competition. He currently coaches the CUHK Law team in the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition. He has coached many successful mooting and advocacy teams over the years, with success in a number of competitions, including the following:
