It is our department’s mission to pursue geographical knowledge and effective resource management to seek solutions for urban and regional sustainability.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

Our world is facing many challenges such as globalization, climate change, resource depletion, and environmental pollution. Geography, being a long-standing discipline using a variety of techniques, has demonstrated tremendous vitality and prospect in helping people to find solutions for these problems. Resource management, particularly in the context of human-environment relationship, has always been a focal point of interest and inquiry in geographical studies. It is our department’s mission to pursue geographical knowledge and effective resource management to seek solutions for urban and regional sustainability.

The Department’s teaching and research are organized around four concentration areas, i.e., Urban and Regional Development, Physical Environment and Resource Management, Geo-spatial Data Science, and Smart Sustainable Cities. Students can purse undergraduate and postgraduate studies leading to BSSc, MPhil and PhD degrees in Geography and Resource Management (GRM), MSc in Geoinformation Science and Smart Cities, and MSSc in Sustainable Tourism. GRM also organizes a joint BSSc in Urban Studies Programme with School of Architecture. Faculty members of the department are actively involved in research projects on issues of climate and environmental change, natural conservation and sustainable development, urban planning and regional development with the support of grants from various funding bodies such as Research Grant Council of Hong Kong. Research findings have been extensively published in leading international journals to advance scholarship. Faculty members have received various teaching and research awards from the university, and national and international organizations. Colleagues are also actively engaged in consultancy studies and play important roles in various government advisory committees and professional organizations to serve the society and academic community.
