1. PCLL PLACES

For the academic year 2023-2024, places are available in two categories: –

  • UGC and Distinguished Scholarship places
  • Self-financed places

2. CHOICE OF PCLL PROGRAMMES IN HONG KONG

2.1If you wish to apply for a place on our PCLL programme, you must do so directly to us.
2.2In your application you will be asked to rank your preferences amongst the 3 PCLL providers. We will only consider applications where CUHK is ranked as the first choice. This will however include applications where you are released by your first choice or where you change your preferences so that CUHK becomes your first choice.

If you wish to change the ranking of your preferences amongst the 3 PCLL providers after you have made your application, you must obtain a written release from your first preference PCLL provider.

WARNING: Although you may apply to more than one PCLL provider, you must select only one PCLL provider as your first preference. At the close of the application period, the three PCLL providers will exchange lists of applicants who have made them first preference. If you have made more than one PCLL provider as your first choice, you will be disqualified by all three PCLL providers from this year’s application process.

3. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

3.1

We will need to see your supporting documents to assess your application. Electronic or photocopies will be sufficient initially. If we make you an offer and you accept it, you will need to submit your originals by the deadline stipulated in the offer letters.

Special requirement for the submission of IELTS results: students must submit documentary proof of their IELTS results (academic module) from a test taken not earlier than 30 April 2020 at the IELTS test centre on or before the first Friday of August 2023, i.e. 4 August 2023, otherwise their applications will not be considered further. No further extension on IELTS submission will be allowed.

3.3

The supporting documents are:

  • Copies of graduation certificates of all your Law Qualifications.
  • Official final transcripts showing all the results of all your Law Qualifications. If your Law Qualification is not yet complete, official transcripts showing all your interim results.
  • Details of your University’s or Law Faculty’s grading system for the awarding of degrees. If you are a student/graduate of the Faculty of Law of CUHK, this requirement does not apply to you.
  • Your valid academic IELTS score report sent directly from the test organization to the Faculty. The test should be taken not earlier than 30 April 2020 at the IELTS test centre. If the test organization is unable to send your official score report directly to the Faculty because your IELTS test was taken over 2 years previously, you should submit your own original score report to the Faculty.
  • Results of core or top-up subjects not taken as part of your Law Qualification (for example Conversion Course examinations).
  • Letter of exemption from the PCEA in respect of any of the core or top-up subjects, if applicable.
  • A copy of your HKID or other identity document stated in the Graduate School Application Form.

If you possess law-related working experience (not including internships and mini-pupillages) of not less than two years’ continuous duration, you are required to submit the following additional supporting documents:

  • A personal statement from you, in English, detailing your law-related working experience.
  • Letter(s) from the organization or responsible superior(s) confirming your work duration.
  • Letter(s) from the responsible supervisor(s), e.g. your supervising solicitor(s) on your performance during the law-related working experience and your suitability to study the PCLL Programme.

Further notes on application documents:

  • The application fee paid is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • Confidential recommendations are NOT required for an application for admission to the PCLL.
  • Applicants with degrees awarded by overseas universities by distance learning or by completing a curriculum of short duration may be required to provide assessment report from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) on the level of qualification obtained. Applicants will be notified by the Faculty separately.
  • The University may require applicants to submit additional information (such as a copy of a course syllabus) or documentary proof if deemed necessary. All documents submitted will not be returned. If the application is unsuccessful, all documents will be destroyed.
3.4Documents which are not in English or Chinese should be accompanied by an official certified translation in either English or Chinese.
3.5Applicants are required to provide true, accurate and complete information in support of their applications. Any misrepresentation in the documents and information provided will result in disqualification of their applications and subsequent enrolments in the University.

Handling of Information
The information collected from the application form will be used for the following purposes:

  • as a basis for selection of applicants for admission to the 2023-2024 PCLL programme offered by the Faculty of Law and other related purposes;
  • for verifying information about the applicant’s public examination results and academic records in relevant institutions in Hong Kong and elsewhere;
  • for identifying records of previous studies as a student in the University or other institutions;
  • as part of the applicant’s student records upon registration for the PCLL programme, which will be used for all purposes relating to his/her studies in accordance with the procedures of the University;
  • for identifying multiple enrolments at this University or at any other tertiary institution upon registration for a programme;
  • if necessary, may be transferred to other units within the University to facilitate admission verifications, communication, operations and planning; and
  • for statistical and research purposes and in such circumstances, personal identities will be removed.

4. APPLICATION DEADLINE AND ADMISSION OFFERS

Applications are dealt with by our admissions panel and we make conditional offers at various stages. Those conditions ordinarily relate to one or more of i) the quality of the law qualification, ii) the passing of outstanding Conversion exams and iii) the provision of a compliant IELTS score report. We may make early offers to applicants with outstanding academic merit before the application deadline of 30 April 2023. The bulk of offers is made in June/July.

Many applicants will be in the final year of their law qualification studies and (save for early offerees) we can only make admission decisions on the basis of their academic performance known to the admissions panel as at 30 April 2023. Thus it can happen that a student is not offered a place who achieves a final result which might have qualified for an offer had it been known at the time of consideration of the application. We try to reduce the chances of this happening by placing a number of applicants on a Waiting List and those applicants may be offered places (the decisions will be made in mid or late August 2023) if such are available. Such places may become available if applicants to whom conditional offers have been made fail to satisfy the conditions of those offers. We send rejection letters to those students who are neither made offers nor placed on the Waiting List.
