Message from Autonomica, operators of the i.root-servers.net DNS root name service ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear members of HKIX, Autonomica, operators of the i.root-servers.net DNS root name service, has installed what we refer to as a DNSNODE site at HKIX. This is also called an "anycast" instance of primarily the i.root-servers.net service, although we hope that we will be able to add other parts of central DNS infrastructure in the future. Access to DNS root name service is important to most Internet applications and our hope is that our presence here at HKIX will be a further step in improving the robustness and stability of the network. Being an "anycast" instance, the DNSNODE site will announce the prefix that contains i.root-servers.net (192.36.148.0/24) in several locations, and let the BGP routing decided which instance you actually talk to. Therefore the only traffic "here" will be traffic that actually gains from using this instance because it is "closest" from a latency perspective. Traffic from other parts of the world will select DNSNODE sites in other parts of the world. As we now provide root DNS service at HKIX we invite everyone too peer with us. DNS root name service is one of very few remaining parts on the Internet that is provided entirely for "the common good". While we will peer with anyone it is important to note that even with anycast making it possible to deploy multiple sites there is no possibility for us to have local presence *everywhere*. Therefore it is important that we get full transit from a few peers. This is not expected to be a great deal of traffic, but it is really important for us to be able to reach the parts of the Internet where we do not have local presence. If you are able to provide full transit then *please* let us know. Our details: Our peering AS is: AS8674 Our IP addresses are: 202.40.161.198 and 202.40.161.199 It is important that there are peering sessions with both our routers, because that is an integral part of the design of the anycast site. We basically use one router for forwarding and the other for peering. You will see 4 prefixes announced from: ^8674_29216$ root server prefix. ^8674$ other DNS prefix(es). MD5 checksums are required, and will be set up on a peer-by-peer basis. For peering, please contact and in the subject line specify both the name of the peering point (HKIX) and your own AS number.
