The programme provides academic training for students to conduct advanced research on history, theory and studio practice of Chinese art. It adopts an all-inclusive approach to Chinese art─traditional, modern, international and contemporary. It consists of two streams.

Ph.D. in Chinese Art (Art History) Stream aims to train up students with the ability to perform original and rigorous research in the fields of histories and theories of Chinese painting and calligraphy, seal carving, Buddhist and Daoist art, funerary art, jades, bronzes, ceramics, prints, as well as contemporary art.

Ph.D. in Chinese Art (Art Practice) Stream aims to train up practice-based students to embark on careers in various fields of creative arts related to a wide spectrum of Chineseness both in traditional and contemporary sense. The objective of the programme is to encourage the advancement of research in Japanese studies by offering graduate training that accommodates a range of academic concerns in the field. Ethnomusicology

• Applicants should have majored in ethnomusicology, musicology, anthropology, or another related field.

Historical Musicology

Coursework

Students are required to take 23 units of courses in two years, including “Research Methodology Seminar I & II”, “Guided Study”, “Special Seminar on Selected Philosophical Issues” (twice) and 6 units of thesis writing course.

Students not already possessing a degree in philosophy may be required to take additional units if deemed necessary. Students shall meet their supervisors regularly for academic discussion and progress report.

Thesis

Students are required to take 6 units of thesis writing courses in the second year of their study and complete a Master’s thesis.

1. have a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy or a related field from a recognized university;
2. have sufficient knowledge of general logic;
3. submit a self-statement (about 2,000 words, in Chinese or English) which would include a proposal of their MPhil thesis and academic interests;
4. submit a paper (8-12 pages for English, 6,000 - 10,000 words for Chinese) on a topic of philosophy; and
5. attend an interview (shortlisted applicants).

Third Language Requirement

Students are required to complete a minimum of 9 units of courses on a language other than Chinese and English. Subject to the approval of the Division, credits gained for appropriate language courses at other institutions may be recognized.

Coursework

In addition to the 9 units of third language courses, students are required to take courses in three years. In the first two years of their study, students shall complete at least 11 units of graduate courses, which include “Research Methodology Seminar I & II”, “Guided Study” and “Special Seminar on Selected Philosophical Issues” (twice).

Students not already possessing a degree in philosophy may be required to take additional units if deemed necessary. Students shall meet their supervisors regularly for academic discussion and progress report.

Thesis

Students are required to take 6 units of thesis writing courses in the third year of their study and complete a PhD thesis with substantial contribution to scholarship.

The Programme is research-oriented and aims at training students in critical thinking to conduct independent research in translation studies. Thesis supervisors are assigned in accordance with individual students' research topics.

Students are required to complete at least 24 units of courses, including “Advanced Translation Studies”, “Research Seminar in Translation I”, “Research Seminar in Translation II” and “Thesis Supervision”. They will meet regularly with their supervisor(s) for discussions on their research topic, complete a dissertation and go through an oral examination. The Division may also require students to take additional courses if necessary.
