In 1966, Professor Sir Charles Kao published a paper which proposed using glass fibres as a conductor for optic communication. He then travelled around and convinced different scientists to believe into the favourable quality of optical fibres.

He persistently conducted research. The first generation fibre optic communication system was deployed in 1976, bringing improvements in communication flow, and starting the era of optic fibre communication. Professor Kao was being named as the ‘Father of Fibre Optics', and was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for recognition of his groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication.
