Abstract:
According to the modal theory of facts, two facts are identical if they are necessarily equivalent. This theory faces the objection that it is incompatible with the best theory of metaphysical grounding, which is the standard theory of grounding, and hence should be rejected. I defend the modal theory from this objection by arguing that there is an alternative theory of grounding that is compatible with the modal theory and is at least as attractive as the standard theory. This argument is partially based on there being reasons to think that, if grounding is transitive, as the standard theory holds, then, contra the standard theory, grounds cannot be disjunctive.
Delivered in English.
All are welcome.
