Tam Wai Lun is Professor at the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies. He received his master’s and doctoral degrees in Chinese Buddhism from McMaster University in Canada. He has been conducting research funded by the competitive “General Research Fund” provided by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange to study local religion and society in Southeast China through extensive fieldwork. He is a co-investigator of the project of Prof. David Faure (Professor of History in CUHK), “The Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society” supported by the H.K. University Grants Committee’s Area of Excellence Scheme (2009-2017). He is also a member of an international research team headed by Dr. Gordon Melton (research specialist in New Religious Movements of the University of California, Santa Barbara), which is investigating a new Chinese Tantric School of Buddhism: the True Buddha School. He has published detailed ethnographic descriptions of local religion in Southeast China in Traditional Hakka Society Series (30 volumes) edited by Prof. John Lagerwey (Professor of Chinese Studies in CUHK). He currently serves as Academic Specialist in the Arts Division of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications and as a Hong Kong Certificate Examination Buddhist Studies Subject Committee member of the Hong Kong Examination and Assessment Authority. He has initiated a Scheme of Professorship in Indian Religions and Culture in CUHK. He is also a founding and executive member of the Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism and the Centre for Catholic Studies in CUHK.
