The George Institute is an independent, not-for-profit, medical research organisation focused on non-communicable diseases and injury, established 24 years ago, with major centres in Australia, China, India and the UK and research programmes in 55 countries worldwide. The George Institute is affiliated with The University of New South Wales and works in collaboration with Imperial College London.
Initially this will see CUHK and The George Institute collaborating for an initial period of twelve months with a focus on neurodegenerative disease, mental health, multimorbidity, health economics, primary care, trauma and injury.
CUHK and The George Institute will collaborate on joint research, clinical trials, advocacy for health care systems, and utilising their combined expertise to reduce the top disease burdens in the GBA and beyond.
The George Institute has been active in China since 2004 with an office located in Beijing and an extensive network of hospital partners around the nation. New collaborations with CUHK will see The George Institute focus on the rapidly emerging GBA and linking opportunities in Guangdong Province with Hong Kong’s dynamic biotechnology and research ecosystem.
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President, said:
“This exciting collaboration will see CUHK partner with a truly global institute to focus on targeted interventions and clinical breakthroughs to improve the lives of people in the GBA and beyond. This partnership is testament to CUHK’s internationally renowned strengths in medicine and is a powerful example of Hong Kong’s role as a superconnector linking international research talent to power the nation’s development.”
Professor Anushka Patel, The George Institute’s Chief Executive Officer, said:
“We are delighted to announce this collaboration with CUHK. We are looking forward to drawing on the unique expertise of both our institutions to work together on crucial areas of healthcare. This exemplifies The George Institute’s approach to collaborate with leading academic institutions across the globe to further our mission of improving the lives of millions of people worldwide.”
