Recapping the academic seminar “明清時期的科舉與科舉「雞精書」:以光緒丙戌榜會試頭場試卷為例” conducted by Prof. PUK Wing Kin on 25 September 2015.

During the Ming and Qing period, the Imperial Examination was the official system to select qualified people to serve in the government. The content of the Four Books was the main subject for the exam, and the Eight-Legged Essay was the writing format for the examination. By a close reading of the essays written by the successful candidates of the Imperial Examination of 1886 and one of the reference books, the 四書味根錄, Prof. Puk’s lecture explores the impact of the reference books on the examinees and literati, and the development and market of such reference books.
