Recapping the academic seminar “The History of the French Revolution: Twenty-Five Years of Bicentennials” conducted by Prof. Noah SHUSTERMAN on 13 November 2015.

1989 was not only the bicentennial of French Revolution but was also celebrated and commemorated with new and old debates and research approaches. While traditional debates remained active, cultural and anthropological approaches were being introduced into the field. It was also when Prof. SHUSTERMAN embarked his academic journey. He shared his career choice making and development strategy in the historiographic change of French Revolution studies since 1989, and demonstrated the new trends in the field with the works of Micah ALPAUGH, Julia OSMAN and Jeremy D. POPKIN.

Recapping the CU History Day

Co-organised with the Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government, the Department held the CUHK History Day 2015 on 14 November. This annual event serves as a platform for the Department to share the teaching and learning of history with the secondary school sector. Participants enjoyed the informative and interesting public lectures delivered by three of the Department’s faculty members on the theme “Hong Kong People and the Sea”. They were also briefed on the Department’s history study programmes and its research strengths. Another faculty member shared with students how to write an effective paper.

With the successful completion of the essay competition “From Dunhuang to Hong Kong: Exploring the Silk Road by Land and Sea” for secondary school students in association with the Hong Kong Heritage Museum last year, the awards presentation ceremony was held during the History Day. Ms. Fione LO, Museum Director of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, was invited to present the prizes to the winners. To encourage secondary students to enjoy the study of history, a short film competition, co-organised with the Hong Kong Museum of History, is to be held during the current academic year on the theme “Hong Kong People and the Sea” and submissions are now called for.

The History Day was filled with activities, with the morning session concluded by two final-year undergraduate students sharing their research trips conducted during the summer. They gave the audience vivid examples on historical studies beyond the secondary school level. The History Day ended with a visit to the CUHK Art Museum in the afternoon.

The event was well received and attended by over 200 participants from 27 schools.
