Congratulations to the graduates of the 2016–17 MA Programme in Comparative and Public History! Recapping the group photo-taking session held at the Lady Shaw Building Rooftop Garden on 17 November 2017. Prof. LAI Ming Chiu, Chairman of the Department, was invited to present the Scholarship for Outstanding History MA Students awards to Mr HUI Chun Yiu and Ms MOK Wai King Louise.

Recapping the undergraduate programme admission and academic talks conducted by Dr. SIU Kam Wah at St. Paul’s Co-educational College on 15 November 2017
Dr. SIU Kam Wah conducted an undergraduate programme admission talk and an academic talk, entitled Modern Geopolitics among China, Japan, South Korea, India and the US” (現代中日韓印美之地緣政治), with Form Six students of St. Paul’s Co-educational College on 15 November 2017. Subject teachers of Liberal Studies, Chinese History and History hope to maintain contact with the Department and that the Department would continue to conduct academic and admission talks at their College in the future to meet the needs of their students.

Recapping the academic seminar “A Discussion of Urban History, and its Relevance” conducted by Prof. Ian MORLEY on 17 November 2017
Prof. Ian MORLEY started with the origin and development of urban history and introduced the primary historical approaches in the field, such as focusing on the process of urbanisation or the role of cities on culture. After sharing the methodology of urban history, he emphasised the interdisciplinary nature of urban history and the importance of using maps by demonstrating various historical maps to the class.

Dr. SIU Kam Wah conducted an undergraduate programme admission talk and an academic talk, entitled “The One Belt One Road Initiative and the Relations among China, the US, Japan and Hong Kong” (中國「一帶一路」建設戰略與中美日港關係), with over 100 students and teachers of four Xiamen secondary schools from the Hong Kong Education Tour of Xiamen Education Association (廈門巿教育學會赴港教育考察團) at Swire Hall on 17 November 2017.

Confronting Predicament: The Mentality and Patterns of Behavior of Chinese Intellectuals in the Second Millennium 25-26 May 2018
About this Workshop
The workshop focuses on the mental and social reactions of Chinese intellectuals in great periods of transformation during imperial and modern China. It attempts to provide early-career historians, social scientists, and researchers from different fields a chance to share findings on the cutting-edge theme of the history of Chinese intellectuals. The workshop is also open to research students and the learned public. Papers of relevance to the following four themes are welcomed:
| 1) | Rise of neo-Confucianism and its influence on the mentality of traditional scholars |
| 2) | Changing mentality and patterns of behavior of Chinese intellectuals in times of crisis |
| 3) | Transition in the mentality of contemporary Chinese intellectuals: global capitalism, state power, and cultural identity |
| 4) | Formation and transformation of intellectual communities in modern China |
