Prof. Frederick DAVIS, R. Mark Lubbers Chair in History of Science, History Department of Purdue University, was invited by the Department to present a lecture to the Department’s postgraduate students.
Prof. Frederick DAVIS started his talk by refining the acronym STEM in environment history studies as Science, Technology, Environment and Medicine. Through reviewing William CRONON’s discussion on the idea of wilderness and American history, Langdon WINNER’s study on technical objects and political relationships behind their placement, and Edmund RUSSELL’s rethinking of evolutionary forces, Prof. DAVIS showed the complexity of the interaction between human and the environment. In that sense, he believed that liberal studies such as history is still important for the understanding of the role of human and its changes in the world around us.
Dr. LI Zhiyu of the Institute of Modern History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, was invited by the Centre for Chinese History, Department of History, to present a lecture to faculty members and students.
WANG Jingwei is a crucial figure in modern Chinese political history. How to make sense of WANG’s ever-changing political orientation? This is the central issue in WANG’s study. In this lecture, Dr. LI Zhiyu traced WANG’s tragic transformation from heroic revolutionary to “Han traitor”, and revealed the complex nature of personality and history.
