Recapping the World History Seminar “Towards a Global History of the World Map: The Translation and Circulation of Cartographic Knowledge in Sino-Western Encounters” conducted by Dr. Florin-Stefan MORAR on 18 February 2022
Dr. Florin-Stefan MORAR from the Department of Linguistics and Translation, City University of Hong Kong, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “Towards a Global History of the World Map: The Translation and Circulation of Cartographic Knowledge in Sino-Western Encounters” on 18 February 2022. Dr. MORAR began the seminar by introducing an overview of the early developments of cartography. A deeper understanding of the process for gathering cartographic knowledge that involved the work of translation in East Asia is pertinent to comprehending the creation of world geography. Additionally, features from East Asian and Western cartographies were discussed through the stories of three maps: Ortelius’s map of China in 1584, Matteo Ricci and Li Zhizao’s map of Myriad Kingdoms in 1602, and Li Yingshi’s Map of Observing the Mysteries of the Heaven and Earth in 1603. This session highlighted the importance of cross-cultural translation of maps in contributing to a nuanced understanding of Sino-Western ways of depicting the world.
Recapping the Academic Seminar “躍出偉人身影外：中國歷史上的守成之君” conducted by Mr. Ian HUEN on 19 February 2022
The M.A. Programme in Comparative and Public History, Department of History, and the Alumni Association of M.A. in Comparative and Public History co-hosted an online seminar entitled “躍出偉人身影外：中國歷史上的守成之君” on 19 February 2022. Mr. Ian HUEN shared his views on history with participants, and examined how the ancient emperors rose to power by applying tactics and strategies from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War with his recent publication The Rising Sons: China’s Imperial Succession & The Art of War.
