To pay tribute to Prof. SO, New Asia College, CUHK, New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies and the Department of History are co-organising a memorial service, to be held on Saturday 26 November 2016 at 10:30am in Yun Chi Hsien, New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Directions to the Venue:

1) A special shuttle bus service has been arranged and will leave the University MTR Station at 10:00am. Participants can board the special shuttle bus at 9:55am at the bus stop near the University Piazza (near the campus school bus route No 2). A staff member will be stationed at the University Piazza, who will hold a direction sign.

2) Take campus school bus No 2 to New Asia College (departure time: At 00, 15, 30 and 45 minutes past each hour) and then walk to Leung Hung Kee Building.

3) Drive to New Asia College and then walk to Leung Hung Kee Building.

Recapping the academic seminar “e考據對文史領域的衝擊：以紅樓夢研究為例” conducted by Prof. HUANG Yilong on 3 November 2016

Prof. HUANG Yilong, Academician of the Academia Sinica, was invited by the Centre for Chinese History of the Department of History, and the Research Centre for Ming-Qing Studies of the Research Institute for the Humanities, to present a lecture to faculty members and students.

Prof. HUANG Yilong, basing on his in-depth study of The Dream of the Red Chamber, gave an exuberant account of the application of “electronic textual research” (ETR) and presented the participants with a number of interesting cases demonstrating how ETR is conducted. He advocated that, in the era of “big data”, ETR may promote the establishment of a new paradigm for humanities research which fuses the latest technology and traditional research approaches.

Recapping the academic seminar “Finding Fong Foo Sec (1869–1938)” conducted by Prof. LEUNG Yuen Sang on 4 November 2016

Prof. LEUNG Yuen Sang shared his experience on how to pick up research topics and how to write intellectual biography through a briefing of his long-term research on FONG Foo Sec. With an interdisciplinary perspective on overseas Chinese and cultural history, Prof. LUENG’s work provided a multilayered analysis of FONG Foo Sec’s life. Prof. LUENG not only explored FONG’s early life as laborer, his conversion to Christianity, his education, and other working experience as an overseas Chinese in America as well as his participation in cultural activities in Shanghai and other cities after he was invited to return to China, but also focused on FONG’s lifelong career, Chinese-English translation and cultural communication. The life experience in the USA and the concern for the future of China deeply affected the contour of FONG Foo Sec’s personal life, and this revealed how such a middleman between the culture of China and the West had made his choices to find his own meaning of life. Therefore, Prof. LEUNG felt that it was worthwhile for scholars to study those who, like FONG Foo Sec, had devoted themselves to making social transformation in China but were unknown to the public.

Recapping the CUHK Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions on 5 November 2016

The exhibition booth of the Department of History was located at the G/F of Esther Lee Building. The Department arranged four academic counselling sessions and two chat room sessions on that day. The occasion offered a great opportunity for secondary students, teachers and parents to understand more about CUHK and the Department of History, as well as obtain the latest information on the Department’s BA programme such as admission criteria, curriculum, learning experience and university life. The whole floor was filled with participants eagerly seeking information.

MA Programme in Comparative and Public History Graduation 2016 and Group Photo Taking

The Master’s Degree Graduation Ceremony for graduates of the Faculty of Arts will be held on 18 November 2016 (Friday). To mark this memorable day, a group photo taking session will be arranged. Staff, students, graduates and alumni of the MA Programme are cordially invited to join in the occasion.

To enhance academic and cultural exchange, Chung Chi College, New Asia College and the Department of History of the University joined hands in 2007 to establish the “Yu Ying-shih Lecture in History”. This year, Professor Hoyt Cleveland TILLMAN, Professor of Chinese History, Arizona State University has been invited as the guest speaker of the following two public lectures:
