Prof. LAI Ming Chiu used bamboo documents unearthed at Wuyi guangchang (May 1st Square) at Changsha to introduce materials and methodology of conducting historical research. Prof. LAI began his talk with the introduction of WANG Guowei’s “Method of Dual Evidence”, pointing out the importance of combining archaeological findings with traditional records in analysing research findings. He then explained how to apply the concept of “Method of Dual Evidence” to the content of Wuyi Square bamboo slips and its research methodology. The batch of bamboo slips unearthed in 2010 mainly focused on government administration documents of the Han Dynasty. It revealed the daily life of people and local government systems in the Linxiang area. Prof. LAI concluded with four findings. Firstly, the change in population was caused by marriage and economic activities. Secondly, a city that was a transportation hub attracted massive inflows of people from different areas to perform various kinds of activities which enhanced regional integration. Thirdly, the diversity of the flowing community varied between businessman and workers, representing a new form of labor force of the Han Dynasty. Lastly, government officials also managed local business activities. It helped researchers to discuss the scope of duties of government officials in ancient China.
