Prof. LAI Ming Chiu, Department Chairman, will be on academic leave from 27 to 31 October and on annual leave from 1 to 2 November 2016. During his absence, Prof. CHEUNG Sui Wai will serve as the Acting Chairman.
Drawing on papers from his book on society and rituals in Ming-Qing China as the thread, Prof. FAURE reviewed his academic interests in social history studies on Ming-Qing China and the starting points of picking up different research topics over the years. He pointed out that secret society, lineage or ethnic minority, are all constructed works but have real impact on local society. The construction concepts are always expressed through rituals. So much so that, he believed that rituals are the key to unlocking the uniqueness and complexity of the society of Ming-Qing China.
