Recapping the Academic Seminar “文獻與田野：《浮生》小記” conducted by Prof. HE Xi on 12 November 2021

In the Graduate Seminar on 12 November, Prof HE Xi gave a lecture titled “When Documents Meet Field Work: The Story of the Research on Floating People,” in which she used her study of the historical anthropology of boat-and-shed living to illustrate the importance of using both documents and field work when conducting one’s research. Prof. HE examined the social structure of the boat-and-shed living people from the Ming and Qing era up to the present, combining research in official records with investigations among surviving boat and shed living people, their oral traditions and their personal records. She elucidated how pressures over time drove many to move to land villages, and how these boat-and-shed living people were gradually marginalised, often losing their fishing rights to those who claimed imperial connections. She explained to students that documents and field work both have their limits, therefore researchers must make use of both methods to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the topic of their research.

Recapping the “CUHK History Day 2021” held on 13 November 2021

The Department held the “CUHK History Day 2021” through a mixed mode of face-to-face and online platform on 13 November. This annual event serves as a platform for the Department to share the teaching and learning of history with the secondary school teachers and students.

Participants enjoyed informative and interesting public lectures delivered by Prof. LUK Chi Hung Gary and Dr. FOK Yeung Yeung on the theme “The Hong Kong Story”, which explored the fun and life experience of studying history. In addition, two of our undergraduate students shared their wonderful campus life and experiences, and the pleasure of participating in summer internship.

The event was well received and drew around 300 participants.
