The Department invited Prof. LIU to meet with faculty members and students. Participants greatly enjoyed their interactions with Prof. LIU.
Co-organised by the Department of History and the Leung Po Chuen Research Centre for Hong Kong History and Humanities, the lecture on “Responses to Challenges of Climate Disasters: A Comparison of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s Most Severe Droughts” was held on 26 February 2016 at the Lecture Theatre of Shaw College. Prof. LIU and Prof. HO shared their professional knowledge and discussed how humans responded to the challenges of climate disasters with a comparison of Hong Kong’s and Taiwan’s most severe droughts. Prof. YIP Hon Ming, Chair of the Department of History, acted as the moderator.
Prof. François GIPOULOUX demonstrated the links between the operating practices of Chinese regional trading groups, China’s endogenous financial institutions, and the mind-set of wealthy merchants in order to explore why China, despite impressive growth, was not genuinely interested in a capitalist type of economic development during the critical period of the 18th and 19th centuries.
