New Book Released by Prof. HE Xi and Prof. David FAURE

Recapping the World History Seminar “The Morisco Problem in Sixteenth-Century Spain” conducted by Dr. Stephanie M. CAVANAUGH on 24 March 2022

Dr. Stephanie M. CAVANAUGH from the Exeter College of University of Oxford, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “The Morisco Problem in Sixteenth-Century Spain” on 24 March 2022. Dr. CAVANAUGH introduced her research in her forthcoming book, Morisco Conversions: Belonging, Status and Legal Action in Early Modern Valladolid which studies how Moriscos living in the Castilian city of Valladolid used legal actions to contest the assimilationist policies aimed at their conversion to Catholicism. Moriscos were Iberian Muslims converted to Catholicism. The attempt to expulse Morisco communities in Valladolid’s Barrio de Santa provoked legal resistance and eventually resulted in new leases to their properties. Between 1609 and 1614, Morisco communities were suffering from forced expulsion that took place under the Spanish Kingdom. The case of Isabel De Molina in 1610 offered an example of a Morisco in Valladolid who met the requirements for being a good Catholic Christian was allowed to stay in the city. The exemption from expulsion was granted from witnesses’ testimony attested to Molina’s piety and devotion to Christianity. Through these historical legal processes, Dr. CAVANAUGH revealed the process of Morisco’s participation in the negotiations over identification and status in the early modern era.
