Recapping the World History Seminar “The Remarkable Immediacy of the Gods of the Roman Capitol” conducted by Prof. Nicholas PURCELL on 24 February 2022

Prof. Nicholas PURCELL, Camden Professor of Ancient History in the University of Oxford, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “The Remarkable Immediacy of the Gods of the Roman Capitol” on 24 February 2022.  The lecture explored how Roman religion was practiced on Rome’s Capitoline Hill from around 200 BC to 200 CE.  Prof. PURCELL argued that Rome’s idea of its own exceptionalism was evident in its inebriation of Roman divinities. The Capitoline Triad, that is the gods of Jupiter, Juno Regina and Minerva, and above all Jupiter Optimus Maximus which held the chief place in the state religion of Rome, illustrated an inseparable connection between religion and the Roman government.  Prof. PURCELL also gave a historical account of the construction of the temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill, how Jupiter’s temple was lost and later rediscovered in the nineteenth century, and how it offers an important contribution to the subject of the historical importance of the Capitol in ancient Rome.
