Recapping the World History Seminar “The Art and Architecture of Egypt from the Earliest Times to the Roman Period” Conducted by Dr. Eleni VASSILIKA on 13 October 2022

Dr. Eleni VASSILIKA, a leading figure in the European museum scene, was invited by the Centre for Comparative and Public History to deliver a lecture entitled “The Art and Architecture of Egypt from the Earliest Times to the Roman Period” on 13 October 2022. Dr. VASSILIKA firstly provided a clear timeline of the art and archaeology of Egypt from the earliest times. To familiarize the audience with the votive and funerary systems, she presented a series of pre-dynastic pottery covering from vessels to figurines. In the early dynastic period (3150-2686 BCE), there were quite a few seated statues of the kings, indicating the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. From the Old Kingdom (2686-2181 BCE) to the First Intermediate Period (2181-2140 BCE), an abundant number of pyramids and pertinent statues of the royal family were shown to elaborate the development and codification of the architectural and decorative schemes. Meanwhile, private sculptures were dedicated in temples. In the wake of the reigns of Amenhotep III, Akhenaten, and Tutankhamun, the salient characteristics of the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods witnessed the final prosperity of Egyptian art. This densely illustrated lecture was concluded by pointing that Egypt became insular due to its innate enclosed culture.
