Shi Shuo, Yu Lu and letters of and between Song’s intellectuals are important raw materials in studying the political and intellectual history of the Song Dynasty, according to Prof. CHEUNG Hiu Yu’s research. He pointed out that the “Cheng School” was founded by two scholars, CHENG Yi and CHENG Hao, but its system was developed by their disciples. Prof. CHEUNG analysed the leading forces of the “Cheng School” and the related materials found in Shi Shuo, Yu Lu and letters to present a complicated political environment of the Song Dynasty as well as the core value of the “Cheng School”. Finally, Prof. CHEUNG cited a French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of “speaking language” and “spoken language” to explain how the interpretations of the Song’s intellectual history materials changed when they were recorded from an oral form to written form.
